~ Kayley ~

The first thing Gwyn said Tuesday morning as she saw me was, "Rayne's better." Without having said a word to her, she knew. I couldn't stop the smile from breaking out as I nodded. "It's pretty clear. You finally are alive again, have the colour back on your face and all. And that's awesome, because I have to tell you something and now you will actually pay attention to what I'm saying." Well, at least she's straight to the point.

She hadn't been at school yesterday, so today was the first time I saw her without the horrible feeling in my gut of knowing Rayne lay under our shed on the cold ground as a wolf, fighting for his life. Now he lay in his bed in his own house and I hadn't seen him yet today. Not that I wasn't worried about him now, but this was nothing compared to the utter misery I felt last week.

I had made Rayne swear he called me every two hours after he left. I didn't want him alone at his house, where David could find him. I hated the thought of him being on his own while he still was recovering, but there was nothing I could do. He had insisted on going home. My father had been up in the air with the announcement of Rayne leaving. I wasn't in for his awfulness, so I had pulled myself back into my room the rest of the evening, waiting for Rayne's calls.

Gwyn was darting in front of my eyes, close to glowing. "I told you Alex asked me to go out with him, right?" I nodded, getting an idea of where this was going. "Well, I listened to you. We met up and watched a movie together and after that we drunk something and, uhm, well... he is really cute." A light blush covered her cheeks.

I grinned, truly happy that Gwyn was finally opening herself up to Alex. "I told you to give it a chance."

She bit her lip while she smiled. She had this glint in her eyes and I knew there was something more. "We're going out in the weekend again."

"Oh, that's amazing, Gwyn!"

"I know, right? It's crazy." She smiled brightly. She looked happier than I had seen her in a long time. When Mallory came around the corner Gwyn pulled me closer and whispered in my ear, "Don't tell Mall, I don't want to hurt her feelings." My eyes narrowed, but I nodded anyway. I would ask an explanation later.

Right then, the voice from the principal came through the speakers overhead. Poor students whose names were called through the hallway. Mostly it were students who'd either earned some kind of detention somehow or who hadn't made their homework a little too less. I wasn't paying attention to who was being called until a very familiar name came by.

My name.

Gwyn and I looked at each other with wide eyes. Mallory laughed. "Oh, Kayley is supposed to meet with the principal, oohh," she was waving her hands dramatically like something was really scary.

"Maybe it's nothing bad," Gwyn said.

"There's only one way to find out." I walked into the principal's office five minutes later, my stomach uneasy with some nerves. I had never been called to the director before.

He motioned me to sit down on a chair before he folded his hands and rested them on the table before him. I held my book bag tight to my belly. "Kayley, I'm a bit worried about you." I just waited for him to continue. "Last two months there have been several periods of you appearing off-minded and tired-looking in your classes. Your biology teacher even send you home one time, because she thought that would be better for you. Should I get concerned about you?"

I smiled faintly. "No, Sir. I'm fine. I have been through some rough periods, but it is okay now. I worked it out." I nodded as a confirmation, but his eyes narrowed. That couldn't be good.
