Rayne
I was numb, unable to feel anything except the gaping hole in my chest. How many days had passed since I had slept? I didn't know, didn't care either. I only knew that every hour I spent away from her, a piece of me died. But it didn't stop me. Nothing would. Even the fact that anything could have happened to her by now didn't make me surrender.
On my way to Mendocino again, windows down, I could barely manage to pay enough attention to not cause an accident. Four days had passed. I was in despair by now.
I drove through the woods just outside Caspar when it hit me. I slammed on the brakes as I swung my car to the side of the road and shot out of my seat. Inhaling, I smelled it here as well. A clear trail following the road. I got in my car and followed it, my nose pointed to the open window. I was fully awake again, my heart hammering. I hadn't come across such a clear trail since I started this.
About ten minutes later, his scent took a turn onto a small sandy path that led deep into the woods. Another ten minutes later, the path came to an end and my breath stalked for a second.
David's car stood under the low hanging branches of a tree.
I parked my car and quietly closed the door. Then I was on my way again. Following the trail that was even clearer here, I soon came to a dark part of the woods were the in branches covered door wouldn't even have caught my attention if the scent hadn't led me there. Opening the door as quietly as I could, I soundlessly walked along the declining ground as the cold pressed into me. Down here his smell was much clearer because the wind couldn't thin it. And then I picked up another scent.
This was it.
My gut twisted at both apprehension, relief and anger. I found them, both of them. I was sure of it.
The dark hallway turned into a larger room with several doors. There was a chair in a corner and a small table next to it, where David stood with his back to me, like he was busy with something. Knowing it was useless to sneak up on him, I cleared my throat as I crossed my arms.
David turned, a sneer on his face. Seemingly unsurprised I was here. "Well, that took you long enough. I knew you wouldn't search around Caspar easily when you were becoming too much of a predictable human. Turns out I was right. You really hang out with them too much."
"Where is she?" I demanded, ignoring his comments and getting agitated with his nonchalant stance. David motioned to one of the doors, bored. I shot towards it and opened the lid. Kayley lay in the back corner, curled up, her back to me. Oh god, baby. "What did you do to her?!" I yelled horrified. "Open the door. Now!" I boomed at him and then turned back the room. "Kayley, I'm getting you out of here."
My hands were clenched, heartrate pounding, vision blurring. Oh hell. You can't get an outburst now, I told myself. You can be outrageous, but don't burst, because if you will, David will lock you up as well and you will never get her out of this hell hole. She needs you to get her out of here. She needs you to be strong, to keep yourself together. You can do this, for her. Stay you.
After taking a few deep breaths, relief flooded me when I realized that the horrifying feeling in my gut was disgust and not the wolf in me.
"You're too late, Rayne. She has given up on you."
"No, she didn't," I denied, not believing him. "She knew I would come for her. I'd always come for her. She'd never give up." I peeked into the room. She wasn't moving. Why wasn't she moving?
"I wouldn't be so sure about that." David pulled a phone from his pocket and opened it, searching his menu like he had all the time in the world. "You and your little girlfriend had this very interesting conversation yesterday. I loved this part the best." His smile was vicious. I had no idea what was going on, but everything told me I hated it.
