I waited. Waited for hours for her to wake up. Hoping that I was allowed to go to her when she finally did. Not knowing when the moment would finally come when I could hold her save in my arms again.

The hours were unending. They almost killed me. I needed to see her and know she was okay. I needed to speak with her, to hear her voice. I needed to hold her. I needed to see her with her eyes open. I needed –

It was useless. Her parents refused to let me in. it was a miracle they hadn't tried to make me leave the hospital. There were so many things I needed and all I could do was wait.

When we got in the hospital several hours ago and a nurse told us only three people could go into Kayley's room, I had to force my lips to say to Sam, "You go, I'll wait here." My head was screaming to me, telling me to go in there myself. To crash down on a chair beside her bed and hold her hand until she woke up. Instead I had fallen down on a chair in the hallway after I rinsed my face from the dried blood of the fight.

I had learned through the wall that Kayley had an indication of dehydration and a lack of nutrition. That's what caused her decrease in weight. She also had bruised a few ribs and her wrist, but next to that she was okay. The doctors said that her being unconscious meant her body had taken over control and gone into survival mode to keep her safe and heal.

Snapped out of my thought by movement in the room, I concentrated. I heard Kayley's breathing pattern change and immediately sat on the edge of my chair.

"Kayley, oh honey," Mia said.

"Where am I?" Her voice was so thin, barely a whisper.

"In the hospital, but you're going to be alright," Mia answered again, her voice full of relief.

Kayley's memories seemed to return, because the next thing she said was, "Where is he? Where's Rayne? I have to see him." No one answered. "Sam, tell me where he is." Another short pause. She knew exactly who to turn to when it was about me, like she somehow knew he would tell her what she needed to hear. Her voice was so much softer as she spoke to him. "He's here?" she breathed surprized. Her heartrate picked up immediately. Was that a good sign? I didn't know. "Will you please get him for me? Please Sam." I was up and standing at the door within half a second, knowing I'd walk in the moment they allowed me to.

"Kayley, you're supposed to rest, that will have to wait. We just found you back," Mia said, the softness in her voice the tiniest bit less.

"No, it can't." The machine that indicated Kayley's heartbeat beeped faster and faster.

"Kayley, calm down. You have to think of yourself first now."

Her breathing only fastened more, turning the machine crazy. I was breaking apart on the other side of the door and they had no idea. Just let me in! She needs me.

Suddenly Sam came in between. "I'll get him. Don't give me that look, dad, you know what happens when I don't. They obviously have something to work out."

I t took everything I had not to burst through the door. When it opened I suddenly got incredibly nervous. They all looked at me, Mia, Thomas and Sam. The narrowed gaze Kayley's parents gave me turned my gut, but Sam's soft and worried eyes gave me the courage to step into the room.

Sam turned to his parents and worked them out with a hand on each shoulder. "You haven't drunk or ate in hours, go get some, take a break, I'll stay with her." They looked back at him, clearly doubting, then Mia sighed, nodded and walked to the door. When they passed me they shot me a look that said, "We're watching you." I swallowed.
