~ Kayley ~
The first thing I blurted when I got in Rayne's car Thursday afternoon was, "I have the perfect idea for this weekend." My parents were gone from Friday afternoon until Sunday and I figured that was a perfect opportunity for me and Rayne to do something different and really be together for a change again. Since Rayne had gone home and only visited after school again, things with my dad had softened. I could see he was trying to accept him, although I knew it was hard for him. But when Rayne came close and touched me, his eyes always narrowed. Because of that, Rayne and I hadn't really felt free to do whatever we wanted. Next to the tension that my father brought upon us, there was my mom who could hear by far the most of what we would say wherever she was in the house, except for when we were whispering.
Rayne looked at me, a curious smile playing on his lips, waiting for me to continue.
"What do you think of me staying over at your place tomorrow night?" I was giddy about this. We could really be with just the two of us again. The last time we had that was quite some time ago.
His smile faded and made place for confusion. "What?"
"You know, me being at your house for the evening... and night." My voice was playful.
"Your parents will agree on that?" he eyed me.
"Probably not," I admitted.
"But – "
I interrupted him. "They don't have to know. They're having a mini break, so they're gone for the whole weekend. I thought you might like to take the chance to do, you know, something fun." I smiled seductively, or at least, I tried to. Apparently, I wasn't very convincing, because Rayne didn't blink an eye.
"What about Sam?"
"He can invite Greg over or something, have a guy's night." I hadn't really shared my thoughts with Sam just yet, but I was pretty sure Sam wouldn't mind having the house for himself for one night.
Rayne's long exhale was the only thing heard beside the low humming of the radio as he looked out of the front view. "I don't think disobeying your parents will help to regain your father's trust in me."
"Don't be boring," I complained.
Rayne's lips worked as his eyebrows lowered. "I would love to have you at my place, you know this, but I don't know if it's worth the problems you get when we get caught. Your dad is finally actually trying not to shoot daggers at my face. I don't really want to test him."
"We won't, I promise. If they truly don't want us to be together without their supervision then the chance of getting caught is bigger when you come to my house, since your scent will be everywhere."
He looked at me, eyes still narrowed when I did my best to convince him with my smile, before looking back at the road. "We'll see," he said eventually. When we arrived at Rayne's mother's house, the car was gone from the driveway. Rayne opened the front door with the key his mom gave him the last time we were here and called inside, "Anyone here?"
No answer. Rayne and I looked at each other. We hadn't been here with the two of us yet. He hesitated for a second on the threshold, but then he walked inside, smiled and said, "I guess this calls for a grand tour of the house. Do you want to see my old room?" When I nodded, he smiled wider and pulled me along, up the stairs.
The walls were white and the stairs led to a small hall with four doors. Two were completely white, one had a "Do not enter" sticker glued to it next to a skull and the other had two pictures of a male and female puppet, the female one crossed through. I was curious which one was his. He led me to the door with "Do not enter" and motioned me to go inside. He closed the door behind me and a deep breath escaped him as he leaned against the door, taking in his room, seeing old memories here. In the exhale I heard how much he missed this place.
