Rayne thought it would be good for me to have some distraction, so tonight me, Gwyn and Mallory were going out. My mom wasn't happy with me going to the cinema on a Sunday evening, but luckily, she had approved in the end.
We had grabbed dinner at a cheap but nice restaurant and were now heading to the cinema to pick up our tickets. Mallory was ogling every hot dude that passed us, while Gwyn was rambling happily about Alex, who had surprized her this afternoon with a lunch date. It was funny how the Gwyn who couldn't even look Alex in the eye the first time they met, was now so in love with him. From what I had learned, he was sweet and caring and didn't push her to do things she wasn't ready for. I didn't see him often, but when I did, I knew he was good for her. They really seemed happy.
Suddenly, she gasped happily. "You know what we should do one time? Get a double date! You, me, Alex and Rayne. That would be so much fun! Then you could get to know Alex better and I Rayne. Don't you think that's a great idea?"
I smiled at her. "Sure. We could do that one time."
Mallory cleared her throat. "And where am I in this?"
An apologetic smile crossed Gwyn's face. "Sorry, Mall. But you don't have a boyfriend. We could meet up another time, would you like that?"
Mallory waved with her hand. "Fine, I guess that's okay."
By now we were in the room where the movie would play, searching for our seats and sat down in the middle of the row of chairs. Gwyn and Mallory were entangled in a discussion I wasn't interested in, so I didn't pay attention. Instead my thoughts drifted off to Rayne, who was still looking for a way to stop the curse, but wasn't finding any. I was a wolf for a week now. Yesterday, I had let myself think about the possibility that there was no solution for the first time. How would my life look then? Were nights with Gwyn and Mallory like this still possible? Would I even be able to say good-bye to them?
Shit. I was doing it again. Making myself crazy with worry while this night should have been about having fun. I forced myself to listen to tune in on Mallory's conversation, but then she fell silent and the movie began.
It was a romantic comedy about a girl who was convinced her shot at love was hopeless. Each time she opened up her heart to a guy, she got it broken. She was sure she was done with relationships and all the trouble they gave, and then she met a mysterious guy who showed interest in her. She kept her distance first, thinking he was the one-night-stand kind of guy, but everything he did and said made her doubt about her first opinion of him. It was nice enough, seeing their sweet love bloom, the male slowly telling her secrets he kept to himself all this life, but halfway through the movie, another character caught my attention. The male's father was cruel, remorseless and aggressive. Those evil eyes and brown haircut immediately caused alarm bells to go off in my brain. If they would turn David into a movie character, this would be him.
It made me fidgety on my seat. I didn't like this. It reminded me too much of the days I had spent in that cellar. Half an hour later, I had grown so uncomfortable that my muscles had tensed, my breathing was short and my hands lay in fists on my lap.
Then I felt it again. Like I was being watched. I hadn't felt that often anymore since I had been spending more time with Rayne. Carefully, I peeked over my shoulder to the spot where the staring seemed to come from.
My breath stopped. There, at the last row, was David. He glared directly at me. I jerked back and stared at the screen with wide eyes, my heart pounding. I had to get away from here. "I need to go," I muttered to Mallory who sat beside me and took off. I managed to fast-walk until I was out of the room and then took off running, needing to get as far away from him as possible.
