~ Kayley ~

It was a long weekend. Sam and I pulled back into my room a lot, talking or just lying on the bed and looking at the ceiling in silence. I had told Sam the whole story about Rayne and he told me about his discovery. We giggled together and we felt close to crying together at times, but that was all okay.

Sunday afternoon Gwyn had come over  for an history assignment and we sat in my room with the three of us. The sun shone outside the house and mom was gardening in the backyard, so there wasn’t any threat of eavesdropping danger. Sam made his homework in my room too and once in a while we would cuddle up together on my bed and relax for a quarter as a break from all the words and brain-breaking questions.

I was glad Gwyn and Sam got along so well. It was like the complete opposite of how Mallory and Sam acted around each other. She thought our bond was way too close for a normal brother-sister bond and she had no trouble with showing that she thought that. Sam assumed she just didn’t like him and kept his distance.

But Gwyn was different. The shy, silent girl in school who avoided looking in any guy’s eyes  had no trouble getting close to Sam. Now she rolled from my bed laughing when Sam said something extremely funny. Sam saw her fall and doubled over with laughter as he fell off the bed too. I was standing at the end of my bed and shook my head with a smile on my face. I had been too busy in my thoughts to catch the joke, but it was good enough watching them.

Sam put his hand on the blanket, his head just above the edge of the bed, as the tears still rolled down his cheeks and his face was as red as a tomato.  “Oh my god Gwyn, did you seriously just dropped off the bed?” he shrieked with laughter.

“Ha,” I said laughing now too, “You just rolled of my bed too, Sam.” I heard another shriek from behind my bed on the ground; Gwyn was still lying there. I walked around and entended my hand to her and her clammy one took a hold of mine. I pulled her up and she sat back on the bed, still giggling.

“It’s wasn’t that funny, right?” Sam asked, his smile gone.

Gwyn’s smile faded at his expression. “It sounded quit funny,” she shrugged. Sam sighed and looked at his hands folded in his lap. “Did I do something wrong?” Gwyn asked as she saw his sudden change. He shook his head, but remained to look down. I gasped quietly as I realized where this was going. He was going to tell her. He took a deep breath and looked up at me with question in his eyes. “What’s going on, Kay?” Gwyn asked, looking from Sam to me and back again.

Sam took another deep breath. “Gwyn, why are you so relaxed around me while you are so tensed up around other guys?”

She blushed, hung her head and mumbled, “I don’t know. I…”

Sam bit his lip and said, “Okay, forget what I said, I shouldn’t put this on you, it’s me anyway. Can you keep a secret?” He looked up at her. She nodded hesitatingly, unsure where he was going to.

He seemed content enough with her answer, because next he said was, “I just figured out I’m gay.”

Gwyn’s eyes widened, her mouth open, she looked at me, back at Sam, and closed her mouth again. Sam wasn’t sure what to think of her reaction, because he wasn’t looking at her anymore. She opened her mouth again. “Please don’t take this as an offense, but I don’t know what to say right now,” she pleaded.
