Ashton POV

"Why are you so nervous?" Luke asks as we walk to school. " It's the first day, and my first day back at school after a year." I explain and fix my beanie. I hold on to the straps of my back pack and bite my lip nervously. " I'm sure things will be fine, your in a better place now," Luke says looking over at me a spark of optimism in his blue eyes. " I guess but I'm still nervous, what about making friends? How will I do that?" " Ash your so out going and funny, and not to mention adorable how could anyone resist those dimples." I giggle and look down at my converses." I mean.. everyone who was there last year is not this year, it's all new people. "Your right."

"You may even find love."

"Don't talk to me about love, I'm happy to be out of my last relationship, I need to focus on bettering myself let alone loving someone else," I say. " Okay fine." He huffs. "We're here."  I turn the corner and see our school and my heart races. It's bigger than I remember and everyone seems to be outside. I see a group of people at three tables in front of the large brick building. "Schedules," Luke says reading my mind as we make our way to the table. I follow behind the blond and go to the nearest table. "Morning Luke ready to be back?" The girl at the table asks. He shrugs and smiles. "Not really but hey four years are flying by." " You're telling me!" She says, she then looks behind him curiously and looks at me and looks shocked. " Who's your friend?" She asks. " Oh!" Luke turns to look at me and I move forward reluctantly. " This is my friend Ashton, he went here last year."

"Ashton Irwin?" the girl asks. I nod. " I thought you dropped out? You were MIA the whole year." She says. " I took a-"

"That's enough chatter, Megan." A teacher says walking behind her. She jumps and hands Luke his schedule and goes back to work. " Does everyone here know why I.. left?" I ask nervously. " I don't think so, why should they care though?" Luke asks and goes to the table marked by last names D-I. " I mean... it's nothing." I say as I go up to the table. The girl at it luckily is not very talkative. Until she reads my name,  She looks up at me curiously. " Your back? I thought you moved or worse.." I want to say something sarcastic but I  just get my schedule and follow Luke inside. " Do we have classes together? Luke asks holding his schedule next to mine. " Looks like we have art together." He says.

"HEY GUYS!" I jump to see Michael and let out the breath I was holding. " Ash welcome back!" He says happily and puts an arm around my shoulders giving me a squeeze. " Hey Michael and thanks, new hair color?" I ask noticing that it's dark blue. "Yeah, you like it?"  He asks letting go of me. " It's cool," Luke says. We go find our locker and part ways to go to class. I get to my first class of the day that is French and want to slam my face on the desk. People keep staring at me and I know that there has been some talk about me missing a year of school. All my classes are slow and we play icebreaker games in each one, and  I'm absolutely over it. I get to my lit class when I notice a new student, he's not talking to anyone and looks terrified. I slide into the desk next to him. He glances over and I can't help but admire his eyes.

"Hi I'm Ashton," I say. He smiles and writes something on the corner of his paper

hi, I'm Calum :) He writes, "Are you shy?"I ask. He writes on the paper again.

A little "Do you talk?"  I ask.  No, he writes.

"Why not?" I ask but the teacher has started talking. The whole class period is long and everyone keeps trying to talk to him but he won't say a word. I'm at lunch and notice Calum at a table by himself and feel bad. " Where are you going?" Luke asks noticing that I'm getting up. "To sit with  Calum."  " Who?" Luke asks raising his eyebrows. " the guy sitting alone over there he's in my lit class. He doesn't talk." "Sounds weird to me," Michael says. I elbow him in the ribs and he looks at me in pain. "That hurt." He whines. " I'm going to talk to him I was that kid once," I say. I set my lunch down next to him. He turns and looks at me. " Hi." He nods. "I saw you were sitting alone  and figured you would want some company." He smiles a little at this. I nervously drum my fingers against the table. "I was wondering...  why don't you talk?  His eyebrows go up in surprise. "Is it cause you don't want to?" I ask and feel like I just offended him. He pulls out his phone and types something rapidly.

Because I can't, and no I'm not stupid because I don't talk either if your thinking that, cause everyone thinks that. " I don't think that," I say taken aback by his up-frontness. " So do you only type and write down what you want to say?" I ask. He types again. Yep, and teachers hate me thinking I'm just being difficult. " I'm sorry."  He shrugs before typing something else,  It's whatever, but thanks for having lunch with me :)  I  look up at him and smile. "Of course, we should do this again." I reply.  Lunch is over way too soon and I'm about to get his number but he's gone.
