1956: A Kennedy Story

Chapter 118

October 31, 1956 Halloween

Jack put an arm around Jackie who was holding Bella. They were in front of the house taking a Halloween family photo.

Bella's crying face luckily didn't show until after the photo was taken.

"Well Mrs. Dracula, shall we go?" Jack asked, holding an arm out to her.

"Yes please Mr. Dracula." Jackie smiled.

They had decided to put Bella in a stroller since their arms would fall off, rotating turns carrying Bella, Jackie was suffering enough, she had complained, and Jack believed her, that her feet hurt.

Jack suspected they'd be out for about thirty minutes, probably less, before they would head back.

The first house wasn't decorated very much, and they had to walk up some steps to get to the door but it was worth it, the old married couple that lived there had plenty of candy.

At the next house Jack sighed. There was a sign on the lawn saying,"Republican's only."

Jackie followed his gaze and rolled her eyes.

Bella was eating a piece of Hershey's choclate Jack had snuck her, Jackie was craving peanut butter so was eating Peanut Butter choclate candy, he didn't know what it was called.

Jack was helping himself to a new candy called SKITTLES.

They had tiny S's on them and were rainbow colors, and chewy, and tasted like fruit.

Jack found them,"Yummy."

Jackie laughed at him as they approached the next home,"Trick or treat." Jack and Jackie said.

Bella giggled.

A young women, about Jackie's age smiled tiredly at them, seemingly to tired to notice who they were, and gave them some rock candy before saying goodnight.

Jack and Jackie went to the other houses on the block, but Jackie's feet soon were flaring up, and Bella was falling asleep so the family of three headed back home.

When they got home, Jack put Bella to bed and told his wife to sit down as he massaged her feet.

"Mmm Jack?" Jackie asked tiredly from her chair.

"Yes Jackie?" He asked, rubbing circles on her tendons.

"I love you."

Jack smiled,"I love you too."

"Goodnight." Jackie said.

Jack laughed,"Night."
