( GRINNING EAR TO EAR )by onemorefanaccount

The dipping of the bed makes you jump.

Your eyes tear away from the papers in front of you to your boyfriend who now sat beside you with a small smile. Removing your earphones, you look up at him, "Hey," you greet, "you scared me."

Ross reaches his hand out and takes yours in his, "Sorry, I called you but I guess you didn't hear me."

"It's okay," you smile, toying with his fingers as you lean back further in the bed. "What did you need?"

His expression brightens at the question, becoming almost mischievous. "Come with me," he requests, rising to his feet and holding out his other hand.

Without hesitation, you slip your free hand in his as he helps you stand. "Where are we going?" you ask.

"Just out to the lounge," he comments, starting to walk backwards out of the room. "Close your eyes." Seeing the brief indecisive look pass your face, he sends you a reassuring smile. "Trust me."

Nodding, you take a deep breath and close your eyes-letting your boyfriend lead you through your home. "Please tell me you didn't get me anything," you sigh. At his silence you groan, "Ross! What did I tell you about giving me gifts?"

His thumbs gently trace comforting circles on your wrists, "It's for me as much as you," he insists. "I promise."

Your hum a response, "What is it?"

Ross laughs, "You'll see any second now."

Your brow furrows as you hear something familiar, but something you couldn't recall immediately, "What was that?"

"Just be patient for a second longer," he instructs, helping you sit on something you noted to be the couch. "Okay, hang on," he says, moving to sit beside you. You feel his arm slide around your waist as he pulls you into his side. "Open," he whispers.

Your eyes take only a moment to adjust before you saw the beautiful dog sitting in its carry cage. "Oh my God!" you exclaim, your hands shooting up to cover your mouth. "It's gorgeous!" Ross chuckles as you grip his arm, "Are they really ours?"

He nods, "(D/N) is a rescue. He needed a home and I figured you'd love him. I'm sorry I didn't mention it, but I wanted it to be a surprise."

You hit his hand gently, "It's the best surprise," you tell him. "I want to hold him," you whisper.

Ross smiles, releasing you before kneeling on the ground to take him out of the cage. "Here," he says quietly, placing the dog on your lap. "He's not even a year old yet," he informs you. "(D/N) isn't fully trained, but he knows the basics."

You coddle the dog in your chest, pressing a kiss on his head. "I already love him so much," you proclaim, giggling as he licks your shirt.

"They told me he might need a little time to adjust to his new home, (D.N)'s known to be a little anxious."

"You poor thing," you mumble, scratching behind his ear. "But don't you worry, you're going to love it here," you insist. "We'll give you a stress free environment," you promise him.

Ross moves back to your side, resting his arm on the back of the couch behind you, reaching over with his other hand to rub the dogs stomach-who was now lying on his back on your thighs.

"Thank you," you say to Ross, turning your head so you could see him. "This is seriously the best gift I've ever been given."

He leans forward, softly kissing your forehead, "You're welcome," he whispers.

"We're forming our own little family," you tell him, unable to keep the girl off your face, causing him to smile too.

"It's a pretty good start," he comments, moving your hair behind your shoulders so it was no longer hanging above the dog.

Laughing, you turn your attention back to (D/N) who was trying to get your attention. "Oh I'm sorry," you coo, continuing to rub his belly. "You're so beautiful," you comment. "Just look at you!"

Ross remains sitting by your side, eventually moving only to rub your back gently. "We'll have to go shopping to get a few things for him," he tells you. "We should probably do that sometime today."

Nodding, you lean into his side, "Okay. We should make a list so we don't forget anything," you mumble.

"I'll do that now, you can stay with him."

"Wait!" you insist. "Can you just...stay here with us for a little longer?" you ask him. "Please?"

Ross pulls you closer to him, "I can do that," he murmurs, kissing your temple.
