the last day i saw you

you said
see you soon
and it never struck me
that in only a handful amount
of hours you would
have joined the constellations
we connected with our fingers
lazily
in the nights that we found restless
even though i remember
on one of those chilly evenings
when we waited for the clouds to
depart from one another
that you admitted you hated
endings
and never finished your favorite shows
or said goodbye
or the funny part of it all
about how the teacher in fourth grade
would bicker and try to drill into your head
that sentences needed periods or
exclamations or even question
marks to complete it
but you hated that word
completed
because you never felt full yourself
and making an end to a conversation
disconnected you
from ever feeling that you have a restart
to something already ended.

that night you opened my mind 
to the idea of it all
and how scared you were 
of it all coming to an end
completing the story
of our own friendship
but i grabbed your pinky with mine
and i promised you
that even when we were one
with the stardust
or wherever we end up to be
that we will see each other again
that death can't even do us apart.

tears brimmed your eyes when you waved that finale day
but you were too far away for me to even see
how broken you truly were
but you never said goodbye
and i still haven't either
when i find myself looking up at the starry night
and waving hello
telling you about my day
and always whispering
see you soon
before chasing sleep
and awaiting for you
in my dreams.
