Jess's PoV

A circle was starting to form around Hadrian, Mevia, Otto and I. I could feel my anxiety creeping up my throat and the tears brimming in my eyes. But I still stood up and glared at Hadrian. "Give me back my book," I said, sounding soft in comparison with Hadrian's booming voice.

"Come and reach it shortie!" Hadrian said and held the book above my head. I looked around at the students who were mocking me, hoping one of them would help. But none of them stepped forward. I took matters into my own hands. I didn't jump up to grab my book. Instead, I raised my foot and stepped hard on Hadrian's.

He howled in pain and fell to the ground. I stood over him, and swept the book out of his hands. "I got your back Hadrian!" Mevia exclaimed above me. I winced, waiting for the pain to come. "And I've got your back Jess-." someone said softly, I looked up to see that Romeo had Mevia's hands to her back. Otto stepped backwards and ran away, pushing his way through the crowd.

I looked at Romeo, who let go of Mevia's arms, making her immediately run away with Otto. "Mevia! Come back here you coward!" Hadrian shouted in anger and before I knew it, Hadrian had picked up a sharp chunk of rock and swung it at me.

I screamed, holding my face. There was a line of bright red blood on my hand. The students around us screamed but it was Romeo who took my wrist and dragged me away from them. "Jess- Jess calm down." he murmured as he brought me to the back of the school.

"Oh god- that's a lot of blood. I-." I was starting to freak out, my anxiety getting the better of me. "Shhh.. calm down. We can clean this. It's just a minor scratch." Romeo said reassuringly, his voice soft. He took my shaking hands and put them on my lap while he also held up a handkerchief.

I watched silently as he stood up and came back with a basin of water and another cloth. Without a word, he confidently dipped the handkerchief into the basin of water and wiped my face. I stayed still, hoping that my anxiety would die down a little. But my racing heart couldn't stop beating.

"I'm done. And..." Romeo reached up and wiped my cheek with the other cloth. "There. Now, maybe it'll scar but you'll still look as pretty as ever, Jess." He smiled softly, still kneeling in front of me. I shakily took out my mirror and saw a faint line from the side of my eye down to my cheek.

"I look hideous." I mumbled, all my courage gone. Romeo smiled a little. "Then I'm hideous too." he said and parted his hair a little for me to see that he had a scar from his forehead to his left eye. "Biking accident. Hadrian." Romeo said, waving his hand absentmindedly.

"Why am I not surprised?" I laughed, relaxing a little more. Romeo smiled faintly. "Because it's Hadrian. Are you going to report him?" Romeo asked, twisting the damp handkerchief, making it dry. "No. You'll get into trouble. You fought them too." I said, leaning against the wall, my knees to my chin.

Romeo looked at me but said nothing. I rested my head against the wall and looked at him. He was looking at the ground, his red hair falling into his eyes. "Romeo..?" I asked softly. He nodded to show that he was listening. I smiled and looked up at the trees.

"Thank you."
