Aiden's PoV
Aiden paced around outside the bathroom, biting his nails nervously. Petra's been in there for almost an hour... and yet, she hasn't said a word. Maybe it was because... of that other guy. Jesse. Aiden knew Petra had a crush on that boy for the longest time.
Aiden continued pacing around, outside the locked door. He didn't know if he should knock on the door again though... would that be an invasion of privacy?
Aiden looked at his watch. It's been an hour. More pacing. Petra's been really depressed ever since Jesse rejected her. Pacing. She wouldn't eat. Or drink. Unless Aiden was there to help her. She just... started fading away. Aiden clenched his fist, wondering if she was alright in there.
"Petra?" Aiden knocked again. He sighed when he heard no sound from the other side. Truthfully... he had a crush on her. But he was always too afraid to admit it. Aiden was always the shy type. Which kind of surprised him. Everyone thought he was the strong silent type but.. Aiden smiled a little to himself. They were so wrong.
All he wanted to know right now... was if Petra was alright. Once again, Aiden knocked. "Petra? Please answer!"
He closed his eyes, one hand against the wood and his forehead leaning on it as well. "Please answer." he muttered. Panic started to take over him as the minutes passed. What if she- no. He couldn't think of that. Petra wasn't the type to... kill herself. Would she?
Aiden opened his eyes and went to find the spare keys to the bathroom. Finally, he managed to find it, lying on the small desk Petra always sat at whenever she was reading. Aiden remembered that she always read his books. No matter how boring or crappy they were.
And she always gave him ideas and reviews about it. It's was her honesty that captured his attention in the first place after all. However now wasn't the time. He grabbed the keys and stopped again. Looking at a pale blue envelope sitting on top of one of his recent books. The last one Petra read before she got really upset.
Aiden picked up the envelope and saw his name written on it. It seemed to have been written in a hurry.
Aiden looked at the bathroom door, which was still closed. He slowly slid the paper out from the envelope and read. And his fingers started trembling once he read about halfway through.
When he got to the last line, Aiden had to hold onto the wall to keep his balance. He tried to take a deep breath but he couldn't believe what he just read. Pushing away from the wall, he ran to the bathroom. Dearest Aiden, if you're reading this... I'm gone. Aiden's fingers trembled as he tried to find the right key, tears starting to form in his eyes.
I'm sorry for leaving you. Aiden finally found the key and slid it into the lock. I know this might seem worthless now.. but... Aiden stopped when he saw her. Take care of yourself. "Petra... no.." Aiden fell to his knees and hugged her tightly, tears running down his cheeks as he held her close.
I'm sorry. Aiden cried harder as he remembered her last words. Don't try to save me. He pulled out his phone and called for an ambulance. Even though it was useless. You've been a good friend to me. "Please... hold on." Aiden's voice trembled as he held Petra's lifeless body.
And I don't deserve that. Aiden started to talk to the person on the other end, explaining what happened. I'm sorry if you liked me as more than a friend... Aiden closed his eyes, so that he wouldn't see the penknife which was still curled around Petra's hand.
Keep writing those books. Aiden only opened his eyes when a paramedic tapped on his shoulder. And don't forgot to check for spelling errors. How could she joke at a time like this? Aiden watched as the medics wheeled her away, and into an ambulance.
I'm sorry for leaving you. Aiden stood outside the house, his hand still clenched around the pale blue envelope.
Goodbye...
**********************
2 years later.
Aiden walked through the brown autumn leaves, his hands in his pockets and his scarf wound tightly around his neck. Two years and yet... he was still thinking about her.
Aiden looked up at the sun, noting that it was nearly four. He had to visit her sooner or later...
So he took a detour, straight towards a familiar headstone, hidden among some leaves and beneath a birch tree. Birch was her favourite after all... it was something she told him a very long time ago.
Aiden could remember her, whittling away as she talked about Jesse nervously. Aiden set down a bunch of flowers on her grave and watched as the wind blew a few petals off.
And he could remember the day the doctors announced that there was no saving her. She had bled to death, with the help of a penknife. Aiden had to collapse onto a chair, as soon as he heard the news.
And Aiden could remember punching Jesse. Causing a scene in the hospital and getting both of them kicked out. Jesse had a black eye. Which Aiden didn't regret giving it to him one little bit.
He could remember her funeral, but he didn't cry, because he knew that she was in a better place. A better world.
"I miss you." Aiden said quietly, kneeling beside the stone, which had her name engraved on it. "But I'm moving on." he smiled sadly, running a finger across the familiar name. He pulled out a blue envelope, which looked like it was falling apart.
"I love you." Aiden smiled, standing up and leaving the envelope behind, along with the flowers..
