Petra's PoV

She picked up her guitar, strumming the strings gently.

It was a quiet day so far, so Petra was sitting on her windowsill, her legs dangling in midair and the garden far below.

She was playing so much that she didn't notice the boy, staring at her.

Almost an hour had passed when she looked up just in time for him to gasp and fall back into his room with a loud thump. Petra couldn't help but laugh. What a weirdo.

"I-I'm sorry. I didn't mean to!" the boy stammered, holding onto the sill and pushing up his glasses. He had a nerdy type of vibe, with the glasses and blonde hair. "It's okay, music should be listened to." she coaxed out another tune from her guitar, making the boy smile.

"Wow.. you've got words." he stammered, leaning out of the window and looking at her enthusiastically. Petra raised an eyebrow. "I wouldn't lean out if I were you." she replied, strumming again.

The boy shrugged, falling back into his room. "Nice to meet you, neighbour." he pushed up his glasses again. He held out a hand for her to shake. Petra sighed and shook his hand, leaning forward. "What's your name anyway?" the boy asked, leaning against the sill.

For a nerdy guy, he seemed pretty comfortable around her. Usually nerds would just scurry away and hide whenever girls walked past them. But this guy... he was kinda different.

"Petra. You?"

"It's Lukas." he smiled. "Petra's a nice name."

Petra looked out at the sun, which was barely visible through the leaves of the trees. "Thanks. But I don't like it much." she admitted, strumming again.

"Why not?" Lukas sat on the sill, one leg in his room. Petra frowned. Should she tell him? A complete stranger.?

"My dad gave it to me. I don't like him though." she said, shrugging.

Lukas stayed quiet for awhile, watching as Petra strummed the strings.

"Well... I don't like my mom, she can be a little mean but Lukas is the name she gave me so I'll use it." he shrugged.

"They're family after all."

Petra had to agree with him. No matter what... family always came first. "Huh. Now you're the one who has all the words." she smirked at Lukas.

He smiled and opened his mouth to say more but he flinched when someone yelled his name. Probably from the kitchen, Petra assumed. He sighed. "I gotta go." he said as Petra shrugged. "It's alright. I'll always be here."

Lukas smiled. "Nice to meet you anyway." he slid his window shut and Petra watched as he left the room, his door ajar.

After that, Petra and Lukas talked. They exchanged stories, jokes, words of wisdom as soon... they became friends. But Lukas soon cared about Petra. More than anything else in the world. He lived for her smile. Her jokes and her sarcasm.

Except... something went wrong that day.

"Hey Pet." Lukas slid open his window as per normal, ready to talk to his neighbour. The girl was sitting on the sill, just quietly staring at a piece of paper in her hands.

Lukas immediately knew something was wrong with her. She didn't look up when he called. Maybe she was listening to music with her headphones. Lukas sat on the sill, one of his legs still in his room to keep him steady. "Petra? You okay?" he asked, concerned that she wasn't saying anything.

Lukas watched as Petra used her sleeve to wipe away her tears. "Hey... it's okay, what's wrong?" he asked as Petra looked at him, her lip trembling from holding back her tears. Lukas has never seen his side of her before. "Petra.. please tell me what's wrong." Lukas pleaded.

She sighed. "I... have five years left.." she squeezed her eyes shut.

"What?" Lukas asked, confused.

"Lukas..." Petra opened her eyes and he saw tears starting to trail down her cheeks. "I don't know how to say this.. but... I have brain cancer."

Lukas sat back, feeling his heart plummet. "Brain... cancer?" he repeated, unable to believe it.

Petra nodded. "I don't know.. it was so.. sudden. My mom just told me and.." she shook her head, unable to speak.

Lukas looked at her, his vision blurring. "Petra... I'm so sorry.." he said, but he wasn't sure if he should say that though. "Isn't there a cure or something?" he asked. He had to do something... anything.

Petra shook her head again, her eyes still fixed on the grass below them. "Five years. That's all."

Lukas stayed silent after that. The two of them did. They just sat at their windows, a few feet apart but not saying anything. After awhile, Lukas finally had an idea. He couldn't just sit around and do nothing.

"Petra..." he looked at her. She looked up, her eyes not as red as before but still red nevertheless. "It's been at least five months since we met, so I really need to tell you something."

"I know this feels so sudden but I've never been so... serious about this." he held out a hand, waiting. She looked at it, puzzled. "Petra... I really like you. More than a friend." he said, looking at her seriously. Petra blinked, and turned a little red.

"Why.. now?" she asked, still looking at his outstretched hand. Lukas shrugged. "Now or never." he smiled as she reached out to take his hand.

Carefully, she pulled him into her room, where Lukas saw that everything looked really neat and tidy, unlike his room. But all that didn't matter. During those five months, they never really made physical contact. They never met outside. But now...

Lukas looked at Petra, both of them standing in her room. "I'm sorry I took so long just to tell you this." he laughed nervously. Petra smiled, her eyes still red. "It's okay... besides... now or never, as you said."

Lukas gently wiped away her tears, making her look up at him. He never knew she was a little shorter than him. Since they were always sitting at the window sill anyway. "Lukas... I'm really glad I told you about that.. I mean." she sighed but Lukas shook his head, smiling gently.

"It's okay, I understand-." he blinked when she leaned in to kiss him, straight on the lips. At first, Lukas didn't know what to do. Books didn't describe it... but he just closed his eyes and kissed her back. After awhile, she pulled away, her face flushed.

Lukas just held her close. "You have no idea how long I've waited for this." he laughed softly, stroking her cheek gently with his thumb. Petra smiled sadly but didn't say anything.

Five years.
