Jesse's PoV

"Come on Jesse! Get the nets!" his father, Steven called as a young Jesse ran out of the cabin and landed on the sand with both feet, holding a large fishing net. He grinned, pulling it along. "Hi dad!" he said as Steven wiped the beads of sweat off his forehead.

"Heya bud. Ready for another day?" he asked as Jesse nodded. "Of course! Fishing!"

Steven nodded and helped Jesse into the large wooden boat, getting in himself. "Let's go!" Jesse cheered as Steven rowed out into the sea, untangling the fishing nets as Jesse set out some fishing rods.

Steven looked at Jesse as he leaned down to look at the water. The little boy giggled, putting out a hand to let it skim the surface. Steven smiled, throwing out the net as Jesse played with the water.

He looked down at the waves, seeing some fish swimming about. "Dad! Look!" Jesse was always intrigued by the fishes. Steven nodded, not looking at Jesse as he focused on the net.

Suddenly he heard Jesse gasp with shock and alarm, "Dad!" Steven whipped around when he saw Jesse fall right into the water.

Damnit, Jesse couldn't swim! Steven quickly dropped the net and grabbed for Jesse's hand, pulling him up. But Jesse screamed, the waves pushing them apart.

Without hesitating, Steven dived for Jesse, grabbing his hand and pulling him back in the direction of the boat.

Steven tried to catch his breath as he helped Jesse up. The kid coughed up some water, gasping for air as Steven patted his back, trying to get the water out. "Jesse? Jesse, are you alright?"

Jesse nodded weakly, feeling cold but Steven leant him a blanket to warm him up. "Come on, Jesse, say something." Steven said worriedly as Jesse sobbed into his shirt. "I'm scared.." he whimpered as Steven nodded understandingly.

"Alright... lets go home." he said, holding onto Jesse as he rowed back to the dock.

[ Ten Years Later ]

Jesse stood at the balcony of his house, watching the waves. He was now a sixteen year old boy, with deep sea green eyes and tanned skin. But things have changed since his near death experience...

"Jesse come on!" his younger sister, Jessica said, pulling him along. "I wanna play on the beach."

Jesse looked at his mother, who nodded encouragingly. "It's okay Jesse, no one's going out to the water." she reassured him.

Jesse gently gripped on his seashell necklace... the last gift his father gave to him before he passed away. "Please?" Jessica gave him her puppy dog eyes as she pulled on his white shirt. "Alright, Jess... lets go." he sighed. "But only on the sand."

"Yay!" she smiled and ran outside to the beach. Jesse followed behind her, smiling uncertainly. Ever since his accident ten years ago... he hated the water.

As the sole breadwinner of the family, Jesse had to fish for his family and for the money... and each day, he stayed as far as he could away from the water. He knew it was dangerous...

Jessica started to make a tiny sandcastle as Jesse sat on the sand. His bare feet were cut up pretty badly, but he didn't mind. He was handsome, but looks didn't matter... all that mattered was money.

His mother, Alex, was injured from a fishing incident. She sewed clothes for a living and often sold them to the neighbours or at the market. His little sister, Jessica, was only five but even she could find seashells and make them into beautiful necklaces, like the one Jesse was wearing.
