Jesse's PoV
"What are we doing up here?" Jesse asked Petra as she went over to the railings, looking up at the night sky.
He looked up as well, noticing that the sky was just full of dark rain clouds, any star was probably blocked by them.
"It's gonna rain soon." he blurted, mentally kicking himself as soon as he said that. No one usually talks about the weather, right? Unless they were either bored or just.. bored.
Petra raised an eyebrow at Jesse, seemingly amused. "Are you seriously talking about the weather Jesse?" there was a small smile on her face as Jesse tried not to make eye contact with her.
To be honest. Ever since she opened the door of their room, Jesse had immediately taken a liking to Petra.
He did scoff at Olivia and Axel's proclaims of 'love at first sight'. But now that he had experienced it...
"Um.. kinda?" Jesse laughed, embarrassed, as he stood beside her.
"We can talk about other things, you know. We've got two or three weeks to spend with each other right? Might as well be friends." she told him.
Maybe that was what Petra wanted to be. Just friends. Jesse thought.
He was about to say something else when thunder boomed overhead, making Petra flinch and immediately back away, right against him.
"Oh- sorry." she gasped, turning red as Jesse held her steady, so she wouldn't fall.
"Um.. It's okay," he reassured her awkwardly, still holding her arms. He realised that she was a little taller than him, which was a little unnerving. "No harm done."
Except the fact that she had accidentally stepped on his shoes.
They laughed a little, Petra looking up at the purple sky again. "Sorry," she sighed, pushing away a strand of her auburn hair away from her face, "I just... it's gonna sound weird but I get rather nervous around thunderstorms." she admitted.
"So, go ahead," Petra folded her arms, "Laugh."
Jesse raised both eyebrows, "I'm not gonna laugh at that, that's just mean." he looked up at the sky, "Everyone has a fear. It's a good thing you know what you fear after all."
Petra smiled, "Looks like someone's got words. Maybe you should be in writing class."
Jesse rolled his eyes, twisting a wooden bead bracelet he always wore around his wrist. A gift from his little sister, Jessica.
"I do want to be a veterinarian. My dad is one and he helps a lot of animals every day." he told her. "My family owns a farm."
Petra tapped her fingers on the metal railing. "That's really cool. At least your parents.. do something meaningful." she sighed, making Jesse look at her, concerned.
"What do you mean?" he asked, cringing at the words as soon as he said them. Why was he being so rude?
Petra sighed, propping her head up with her arm. "My mom... often gets arrested for drinking and driving. My dad.. he works hard to support us. But I rarely see him around so.." she trailed off, rubbing her cheeks.
"Oh.. I'm sorry." Jesse said automatically, feeling her elbow touch his as they stood together, gazing down at the view.
She shook her head, "It's not your fault Jesse, don't apologise. At least I get some time away from my mom, huh?" she tried for a brave smile but Jesse could tell that this was a rather sensitive topic for her.
"Hey," he smiled at her, "Don't be afraid to tell me whatever you want, alright? I'm your roommate. And.. we're friends. Right?"
Petra gazed at the horizon, where there were some low clouds of rain approaching.
"We better go inside, it's gonna rain soon." she gestured for him to follow, back to the dorm room.
Along the way, a few people waved to Petra, despite her not returning the gesture.
"They're all fakes," she told Jesse as soon as he questioned her about it, "My aunt's a famous person... and all they want is her autograph. It's a bit annoying but Lukas and Aiden are the only ones who are genuinely who I consider friends."
Jesse nodded understandingly, "I assure you, getting an autograph is the last thing I'd ever want. I don't really see the point of it." he admitted.
Petra turned to him, pausing as she pulled out the keycard from her pocket. She shrugged before sliding the card to open the door, "You're better than all of them then, Jesse."

A few days passed, the two of them grew closer. Greeting each other good morning, talking about their classes and just about their family and friends in general.
Jesse knew she was just making small talk between them, since the room rang with silence. The two of them found a solution though, blasting songs through some portable speakers Jesse had.
They kept in their separate spaces of the room, neatly divided by a wall of books and clothes on the floor. It was a simple method, but Jesse was secretly wishing... that they could become more than friends one day.
One week has passed. And each night Jesse opened the door, he either found her reading, using her laptop or standing by the window, gazing out at the field.
And each night, he tried to work up the courage to ask her out. But failing every time, of course.

On Tuesday night, he was making his way back to the dorm room when he found Lukas, standing outside his room.
"Hey Lukas," Jesse greeted politely, making the blonde turn to him, "Oh hey," he shook his hand. "Just wanted to let you know that you can move into your new room in three days. A private room, all by yourself. Isn't that awesome?" Lukas beamed.
Jesse sighed, "I guess.." Three days? And then he had to say goodbye to Petra forever?
He couldn't possibly see her afterwards, since she was in an entirely different class than him and in separate parts of the school.
"What's wrong?" Lukas looked at him, "Oh wait, don't tell me," he held up his hands, "You like Petra, don't you?"
Jesse stared at him, shocked, "Is it that obvious?" he asked, watching Lukas smile.
"Duh, both of you are adorable." Lukas grinned, "And besides.." he lowered his voice to a whisper, "Just go for it. Today. Later." he gestured to the closed door in front of them.
"What?" Jesse sighed, "I cant do that Lukas!"
"Oh come on," the blonde scoffed, "It shouldn't be so difficult. Now go." he knocked on the door and ran away, making Jesse sigh.
"Yeah Lukas, thanks a lot!" he called as the door opened, Petra looking out at him.
"Oh hey Jesse," she smiled, then frowned, confused. "You don't have your keycard?"
Now or never then.
Jesse took a deep breath, steeling himself. "Petra, I need to ask you something.."
The girl paused, standing at the door. Jesse twisted his shirt, and finally blurted out, "W-would you like to go out with me? Be my girlfriend?"
Petra looked a little shocked, making Jesse wonder if this was a good idea in the first place. "Uh.. it's okay if you don't want to, I mean-."
She grinned and pulled him into a hug, laughing, "I thought you'd never ask, dummy." she smiled.
"And besides," she whispered, "I could hear you and Lukas outside the door just now you know."
Jesse turned red, holding Petra by her elbows. "Well," he laughed, "Looks like I'm going to be your official roommate then."
