Third Person
Kang Donghan was leaning on the banisters of the staircase watching Seungyoon supervising the team. He felt excited, almost like a child waiting for spring. Yet, that simile underrated what he was up to. He was going to toss everything to burn. By crook or by hook, Donghan achieved whatever he wanted in his life. He was not the type that backed down despite all the typhoons that raged against him.
“Yes, place that object here. Behind him. Yes. Change the filters and make it appear real.”
Seungyoon was directing the team of editors. Donghan preffered to keep his hands off these work. He was not the type that engaged in such activities and he did not have the ability of such computer skills.
“Yoon-ah, you are doing so much for me.”
“I should help you, CapD. I know you since we were in elementary. But I never would have betted that such a simple girl would have tempted you at any cost.”
“Love is such a weird thing SiC. When you feel that, you would start believing even in fairies and unicorns.” Donghan scoffed.
“But I understand that people need to fall in love. But how could it be that out of all the billions of girls in the world, Kristene Andrews was successful in making you fall for her? Look at Seulgi, Wendy... there are queues of girls waiting to be asked out by you, but you are just forsaking good wine for grape juice.”
Seungyoon was not a person who believed in love. Both his parents died in a car accident when he was in elementary and his foster parents were Donghan's parents. That is how their friendship began. One could say that Yoon was more like Donghan's brother. He always shadowed Donghan and he would not think twice to risk his life for Donghan. It was because of him Yoon had a family. Being his Second in Command or SiC was a compliment that Yoon had.
Yoon got a phone call.
“Arasso, I will tell CapD,” he said in reply to the call.
“Cut off marks for Colleges are to be returned by noon today. CapD.”
Donghan thought for a moment. “Kristene did Arts right? Ask Jinwoo to trace her results.”
“That is simple,” said Jinwoo who overheard Donghan and typed hard and fast at his laptop. He came up with the results in a second.
“Double B and A. An Z score of 2.18. She will go to Seoul National University Law School.”
“Where did you apply for?” Yoon asked CapD who was thoughtfully biting the inside of his cheek.
“Seoul National for Global Environmental Management,” Donghan said.
“CapD scored the best in our section. He will definitely go there.” Mino who had done his calculations came up with the fact.
“Yoon, where would you be?” Donghan asked.
“Life Science and Bio Tech at Yonsei.”
“He would get selected too,” Mino said from behind a pile of papers. “Jinwoo and I are in for Creative Tech Management at Yonsei too.”
“CapD, are you sure that what we are doing is not illegal?” Jinwoo asked.
“It is not illegal, but mischievous. You are helping just a forsaken lover trying to get the beloved again.” Donghan replied as he thrust his hands in his pockets. “Tell me when you are done.”
Donghan walked back to his room just to revisit his memories. Not just his memories; they were Kristene’s memories that held into his heart. The lollipop wrapper that laid under his table cloth was such a sentimental object to Donghan and only Yoon knew about it. The strong, spiteful Donghan also had a sweet side. Donghan got the wrapper into his hands as if it were a butterfly wing. He cherished the darling so much. The memories began flowing into his head as he closed his eyes.
“Eomma, will you come to pick me up? I am new and I don’t know the roads well.”
The girl with disheveled hair asked. Donghan hated such crude appearances. He wanted everything to be prim and nice. This girl looked like as if she had just been released from a lunatic asylum.
“No. Here is change for you. Get the bus and head straight to home okay? I have to check on Julie.” The girl’s mother sounded curt. She did not even bother to escort the girl to her new classroom.
Donghan felt weird. She was changing schools in midterm. People do not swap schools like that unless something terrible had happened. The girl was a bit chubby, her jet black hair matched her ebony eyes.
“Arasso, eomma. I will come home then.”
The girl had a cute foreign accent. She was not of Korean parents at all. Donghan felt strangely helpful. He walked over to the girl.
“Take care, Kristene. Bye.”
Her mother said as she got into the taxi and sped away. Kristene sighed as she turned around to find the office.
“Oh.. an-nyeog-ha-se-yo,” Kristene blurted.
“Annyeonghaseyo,” Donghan said as he bowed.
Kristene gave a slight smile and bowed back.
“Je.. ireumun .. Kristene imnida.”
“I am Donghan. Kang Donghan. Don’t worry, I speak fluent English. Don’t use Korean if you are uncomfortable.”
“Jeez... I was so nervous. Thank you. I am still learning Korean.”
“Here, eat this. It would make you feel better,” Donghan stretched his left hand that had a lollipop. “You must be new here. People do not drop like you from parachutes when in middle school.” He was glad that Kristene accepted the lollipop and he also got his out and put it in his mouth.Kristene followed him. Donghan got the wrapper from Kristene and put it in his trouser pocket.
“Yes... I am new. Would you mind helping me to get to the office? I have to collect the forms my mom had filled and given in.”
“How long have you been in Korea?”
“Just a couple of months. I am actually from Sri Lanka.”
“That explains why you look like a chocolate.” Donghan smiled.
“Well, you are like white chocolates, we are like milk chocolates, Africans are like dark chocolates and after all, the world is full of chocolate people. But thank you for not calling me a Chocolate Chip Cookie.”
Donghan was sad to note that they had already come to the office.
“You are so funny, Kristene. Why? Pimples do pop because it is the age, you know. It is a pleasure to meet you.”
“Mannaseo bangaweoyo.” Kristene smiled.
“Your accent is even more funny. Go along the corridor and you’d see the office on your left.”
“Bye, Kang Donghan. Kamsahabnida.”
“See yah. Kristene... - ”
“Kristene Andrews.”
Donghan waited until Kristene disappeared from the corridor. As the bell rung, Donghan took to his feet. But he never forgave himself for not accompanying the new chocolate girl. If he had gone with her, he would have at least known her class.
Donghan opened his eyes. That was the day he met her. It was just that day when he was in middle school.
