A hidden survival

Chapter 21

"You're a witch aren't you?" Akane looked at him and nodded. He said without a hint of hesitation, "You're still my family." She stared at him with widened eyes before letting out a giggle. He asked in confusion, "What?" She replied, "You have been calling us your family since just now, even though you didn't admit it four years ago." He scratched the back of his head, looking annoyed in embarrassment. 

The door busted open. "Akane!" They called out, surprising both Yu and Akane. She looked at the girls who rushed in. "Girls... Thank god you're okay." She hugged Hana and Sakura. They reciprocated her with a tight hug, "We're so worried." She pulled back, "Where's the girl?" They looked at Yu who said, "She's in another room." Akane lifted her covers, "Bring me to her." Yu frowned and stopped her, "You're hurt." She held his hands and assured, "I'm fine." Just then, they heard a scream coming from the outside, then the floor started shaking. Akane rushed out, followed by Yu. She ran towards the voice.

Forcing the door open, she saw a few soldiers pointing weapons at the girl who is crying. Akane shouted, "Don't hurt her!" The soldiers did not budge, Yu commanded, "Put your weapons down," this time, they obeyed. She ran towards her, "Yuri!" She called. Everything stopped shaking. "Mommy?" The girl voices out. Akane hugged her and patted her head softly. "I'm scared..." The girl said again, her voice so shaky and soft. She tightens her hug, "It's okay. No one here will hurt you as long as I am here, I promise." She carried the girl out. They looked at the night sky. "Yuri, have you heard of the stories of the stars?" Yuri shook her head. Akane smiled and patiently explained, "Look up at the stars, as long as they are twinkling, that's how long your mummy will be watching you." The girl glanced a the thousand stars twinkling above, reaching both of her tiny arms to the sky as she cried, "Mommy! I miss you."

This time, there was no vigorous shaking, it is just like a normal little girl crying. It was a heartbreaking and touching scene. Yu looked at his childhood friend, regardless of four years ago or now, she was still good with children. "You didn't change at all." He smiled as he mumbled.

"Your Mother told me to take care of you." Akane said. Yuri asked, "Mommy told you my name?" Akane smiled, "Yes she told me your name. Yuri represents lily, a very beautiful flower." Yuri smiled as her tears slowed down. Akane put Yuri down. "From today onwards, I'll take care of you. When you miss your mummy, look up at the stars, when you want to say something, tell it to the stars. She'll be able to hear you. Of course, you can tell me anything, I'll listen to you. You're not alone and you won't ever be, okay?" The girl wrapped her tiny arms around Akane's neck, "Okay." She mumbled.
