EDITED

"No way." I said with a growing smile as I looked down at my phone.

"What?" Megan asked as she sipped her iced tea.

I finished my bite of brownie before I looked back up to her. "I just got a DM on twitter." I said and opened it using Starbucks WIFI. "From Adam."

Megan slammed her tea on the tall table. "Fuck off." I laughed, nodding. "What does it say?"

I dramatically cleared my throat. "Hey, so I don't know if you've changed your number or you're just ignoring me but I'd really like to hear from you soon. Kiss Kiss." I said sarcastically reading out the two X's.

She slowly reached for her drink again, a weary look on her face. "Is that a joke?" She asked and I shook my head. "Well don't reply. He's in America it doesn't matter what he has to say."

I knew she was right, but I took another small bite of my brownie before leaning forward on the table. "What if he wants to apologise for everything?" She only shrugged. "That's all I want. just an 'I'm sorry I hurt you'. Then I will forget about him." I said and started typing back. "I'm not unblocking his number, I'll stick to DM's."

She sighed the same sigh I had heard for two years. The 'here we go again' sigh. "Hey," I started, reading out what I typed. "What's up?" I didn't give her a chance to object before I hit send.

"Haylie this is bullshit." Megan scoffed. "He disappears for three months. Gets a new girlfriend and I guess that's not going well since he finally thought of you." I opened my mouth but she quickly silenced me with a finger. "No. Haylie, for two fucking years, this boy, would break your heart and then two weeks later pop up asking to be friends. But it was never just friends. He knew that, he just said it was so he wouldn't have to feel bad about all the other girls he was texting."

She spoke as though she had wanted to say this for a while. As my best friend, I'm sure she had wanted to say it for 'two fucking years'. I just shrugged. "It's been three months this time though." I hated the words even as they came out. Like they were hopeful.

"Yeah. Three months of you heartbroken trying to get over him and you finally did it and he pops back up. He has a radar or something." She mumbled the last bit but I still smiled at it. "I mean it." She laughed. "It's a superpower."

"What's a superpower?" I jumped as the hand landed on my shoulder. Josh laughed, obviously getting the desired reaction from me.

I turned round but he used his football bag to block my fist from connecting with anything. "What are you doing here?" Megan asked, laughing at my jump scare.

He took a seat without invitation, the football uniform looking as good as ever. I'm pretty sure as soon as a boy from our school put one of these on, he was 10 times more attractive. "Just getting a coffee after training. What about you guys? I saw you went to France?"

My mood instantly fell at the mention of it. My mood, my smile, my heart. Shattered.

"Yeah, it was so much fun." Megan said quickly for the both of us. Seeing the change in mood. "Guess who just popped up to Haylie though?"

I felt that mood lift just a little bit at Megan's best friend tactics to divert the conversation. Josh laughed and turned to me. "Let me guess. 6' tall, bright blue eyes and a skin tone to die for?" I contained my laugh as Josh described his very own best friend. "Jesus Christ." He groaned. "That boy is going to get himself in trouble."

Megan scoffed, taking another sip of tea. "What with his girlfriend?"

Josh shook his head but reached for a bit of my leftover brownie. I frowned as he popped it into his mouth. "He doesn't care about her. He's making it harder on himself."
