I sighed as I sat down at my desk with a fresh cup of tea.

Sometimes, when I had to sit through boring meetings, and mark shitty papers and ignore the attempts at flirting from both students and staff, I wondered if it was even worth it. It wasn't like I was strapped for cash, I didn't need this job. And now with Haylie, it would be easier if I did just quit. But I guess it was in the back of my mind that I worked so hard for this. I wouldn't be able to race forever. And despite all my complaints, every student passing a test was my own ego boost.

The bell went signalling third period, the same time my phone buzzed. I pulled it out to see a text from Amy.

Mum & dad want to know if Hannah is coming to Sunday dinner again.

I scoffed and replied as the first student walked in. Haylie had been to every Sunday dinner since the first one, I didn't think they even needed to ask anymore.

I think you mean Haylie. Why aren't they telling me themselves? And shouldn't you be in school?

Students were piling in, so I had to quickly end the conversation.

I am in school. And they will, I just thought I would give you the heads up. Give her time to check with her parents.

I scoffed again, realising she was just trying to dig at me and my parents probably hadn't even said anything to begin with.

I started the year nine class and tried my best to ignore the way Haylies sister was very obviously texting under the desk. I would have tried not to say anything at all, until I saw another student catch me catching her, and I couldn't be seen to give any special treatment. I probably shouldn't even give special treatment. "Alex. Phone." I said holding my hand out.

She looked from the phone to me. Her brown eyes and dark hair matched Haylie's so perfectly that I almost felt guilty. "I swear I'm putting it away." She argued but I shook my head.

"You've been texting for the past ten minutes. Phone now. You can have it after class."

Another student interrupted. "Sir you're supposed to put it in the office." The same girl who caught me called out and I met her eyes.

"This is a conversation between me and Alex." I stated and the girl shrank down. "Alex, phone."

"No, I'm putting it away." She argued so I took a step to her desk.

"If you argue I will make you collect it from reception at the end of the day." I said now genuinely annoyed she was arguing. She groaned before slamming her phone in my hand. "For that you can collect it at lunch during your detention." I said walking back to my desk.

"Detention?" She said confused and I nodded while placing the phone down.

"Yes. Now if we can continue with the lesson..." I said seeing if she would challenge me, thankfully she didn't and I continued, after getting them started on work I sat at my desk and looked through the homework for my maths class. I felt the table vibrate and my eyes drifted to Alex's lit up phone. I would have ignored it if I didn't see the name Luke appear.

You're just jealous of my good looks ;) well don't worry you're the only girl on my mind...

I sighed and sat back.

I looked to Alex working and she seemed like she was struggling. I shook my head in disappointment. Obviously, I would have to tell Haylie, but maybe I should talk to Alex first. Teacher to student. Start actually doing the roll I'm paid for.
