Daniel pov
"You should really start locking this door!" I called as I opened the large white front door to my parents' house. "Anyone could walk in." I dropped my keys into the bowl on the counter, seeing there was already an additional two sets.
I heard the footsteps, quicker and lighter than any of the others. "Dano!" I smiled just as Emma came round the corner her arms just as wide as her grin. I didn't even have to bend down to catch her as she flung herself into my arms. "Where have you been?"
I shifted her onto my hip as I started towards the kitchen. "I've been avoiding you." I whispered just as my mum came into view at the sink, and my older sister at the island. "Jheeze Sammy, you got fat." I grinned and bent down enough to give her a kiss on the cheek while placing my youngest sister back to the floor.
She turned towards me, the knife in her hand covered in potato skin now pointing at my chest. "I'm 7 months pregnant, do you really want to do this?" My mum turned round from the sink just in time for me to place a kiss on her cheek.
"How is my little nephew doing anyway?" I asked, walking back to Sammy.
"You don't know it's a boy." Sammy's husband, Rick, stated as he came round the corner, a bottle of wine in hand. I let my hand fall into his outstretched one. "How are you, it's been a while?"
A groan worked it's way up my throat. "It's only been a few weeks." I commented with a sigh, deciding to take the wine from his hand to pour myself a glass. I was apparently going to need it. "Where's everyone else?"
"Simon, Jess and Dad are setting the table. Amy is upstairs sulking about whatever teenagers sulk about." Sammy sighed.
I let my laugh follow me as I made my way to the large dining room. My father was stood at the end of the 14 seater table, pouring himself a whiskey. "Hard day dad?" I asked motioning to the glass.
He smiled as he met my eyes and motioned to the glass of wine in my hand. "Somethings never change I guess." I laughed as I fell into his embrace. His hand clapping against my back harder than normal. "How's the new job?"
I turned from the question and said hello to my brother and his fiancé while I nodded. "It's great, yeah. I'm settling in."
Simon finished placing down the knives as he nodded. "And the apartment? How does it feel not to be living under this roof anymore?"
I nodded again. "Yeah, I mean I didn't know it would come with so much grief about Sunday dinner."
My older brother laughed and nodded along. "Yeah, get used to it."
My mums voices echoed through the house. "Dinner's ready!"
We all sat down for Sunday dinner, Amy at my side, telling me that she was still mad at me for moving out. Now it was just her, Emma and our parents. Sammy at my other side, sipping on her water while glaring at my glass of wine. We continued to chat about things like work or school. Simon and Jess were divulging some of their updated wedding plans when my eyes fell on the empty seat opposite Amy.
My stare on the chair obviously lingered a little too long as when I turned back to the conversation, it had gone quiet. "Where's T?" I decided to ask.
My mum sighed and folded the napkin over again on her lap. "Not coming."
I sat back in my chair and took a few extra sips of the red wine. "Yeah, thought so." I mumbled when I was done.
"Let's focus on the family that is here. Not the family that isn't." My fathers voice was stern over the table. He may not have been Alpha anymore, but he still had the authority of one. "So, Daniel," He began making Amy snicker beside me at the use of my full name. "Your brothers getting married, your sister is having a baby..."
