Haylie pov
I sat on the curb at the end of the road. It was currently 9:45 and he said he would be here at 10.
He was fine.
I spoke to him last night and he was fine. The guys all said he was fine. Megan and Scarlett even saw him at the garage before they went home. He was fine.
9:51 and the familiar black defender pulled round the corner. "You're early?" Daniel grinned as he leant over to push the passenger side door open from the inside.
"So are you." I countered as I climbed in, my eyes scanning the entire length of him. He had a pair of black sunglasses over his eyes. A white t-shirt with a light blue shirt thrown over the top left open. White trainers and blue jeans. He looked like this every day. As soon as my seatbelt was on, he leant forward connecting our lips. It was quick. Like we did it every day. And despite everything I smiled at it.
"You look beautiful." He sighed and turned away to start the car again. I looked down at my summer dress, littered with white and red flowers. It came to just above my knees so was appropriate but I was hoping if I looked cute enough, they wouldn't question why their son and brother wanted a girl so much younger. "Are you nervous?"
I turned back to him just as he flashed me another pearly white grin that I would never get tired off, his eyes falling slightly to the silver around my neck with an even bigger smile if possible. "Not really." I confessed. Meeting the rest of his family was very low on my concerns right now. "Are you okay?"
He let out a sigh, indicating he knew my question was more than just casual small talk. "I'm fine." He said simply, a hand leaving the steering wheel to land on my fingers on my lap. "Are you?"
I squinted suddenly realising I couldn't see his eyes behind the glasses so I had no idea really if he was completely unharmed. "I saw you." I breathed and he just shook his head, but I beat him to it. "Who was that? Why did they shoot you?"
"They didn't." He said sharply. "I told you, I saw the gun and hit the floor. They missed."
"Who was it?" I asked again.
"It was some guy that lost a race and wasn't happy."
"And wanted to kill you for it?"
He sighed again. Then he thought about his words before speaking. "I should have warned you. The races can be more dangerous here in the UK. It's more business than in Cannes where it was about having fun as well." I stayed silent as he took his hand back, suddenly pulling the glasses from his face and looking at me. Showing me his completely unharmed blue eyes. "Maybe you shouldn't come to my races anymore. Not only did that shit happen but police showed up pretty soon after and if you're caught then we're both fucked."
I shook my head. "that's not fair. I was safe." I argued but he shook his head in response. "I was. Zach got me out. Dwane got Scarlett and Megan out."
"Babe," He started and I loved how easily it rolled off his tongue despite the argument. "I can take responsibility for you, and even Meg and Scar but I can't ask my friends to always be on babysitting duty just because I want to protect you." I stayed quiet, trying to decide if I found that insulting. But I knew he didn't mean it in any way but caring so I nodded. Before I could say more, he stopped me. "How about we get through this and then we can talk at my place later?"
I looked to the screen on the dash and frowned. "I thought it was a family lunch, why are we going so early?"
He laughed. "I'm bringing a girl home for the first time, I imagine everyone will want to spend a few hours enjoying it."
