Why bother taking the bus to work?
Onpyh jobs certainly pay well enough for a decent car. All Onpyh offices have spacious, secure parking facilities, so said car would be safe while I worked, and right on the office's doorstep. Overall, it'd be a whole lot easier than switching busses twice and then a ten minute jog.
But the bus is a great place for meeting people. Sure, there's the general code of silence prevalent on most public transport, but most people can be pretty accommodating when they realise you work for Onpyh.
This little beauty, for example. She was sat in the seats near the back, with a little table, facing each other. The seats specifically designed for conversation. The way she totally ignored me and stared out of the window pretty clearly indicated she wasn't interested in talking. She actually drifted off for a little while, as I talked at her. But I kept speaking, and ever so slowly she started listening. The occasional "mmh" of agreement soon enough turned into a little nod, followed by a quiet "Yes." And before too long, she was absolutely enthralled, hanging on my every word.
Almost snapped out of it when she realised she'd missed her stop, but I promised her Onpyh would call her work, make sure they knew what was going on, that she was quitting and coming to work for us. I told her they'd understand. By now, her little brain was so addled she probably would have believed anything I said.
We got off at the same stop, and she spent the rest of the day at the office, hanging around, talking to all the other girls and a few of the guys. She seemed perfectly happy, giggling away, playing with a few of our prototypes, and on the bus home she told me she couldn't wait for tomorrow! She loved every second of it, and the boss was pleased enough by her to give me the rest of the week off, to take her through all the employee induction stuff.
So why do I take the bus to work?
Well, as I sit here, snuggled up with her on the couch, her giggles coming almost perfectly in time with the gentle pulsing of the Dream Tape playing through her headphones, I can't help but think you'd have to be crazy to pass up recruitment opportunities like this.
