Nick's recovery went very... very fast, just as it had done with me. The doctors were amazed and shocked by the way he walked around one week after the shooting and said our family must have a healing ability. Nick didn't really like the way how we handled Rodriguez though, and he had shouted at Hank never to let me help with such a dangerous plan ever again. Well... he took it back a little after I kept glaring at him, changing it to never let me help with such a dangerous plan if he wasn't there to back us up. Normal life continued again. Juliette and I agreed our life was a circle. We would have a time of peace, then something bad would happen and we would solve it. After that the whole circle started again. Nick and I just finished our weekly training and we walked back to his car, walking closely to each other under my umbrella, it was raining pretty heavily. Ethan told me he wouldn't be home for dinner tonight. Juliette counted you in for dinner. He said the moment I arrived at the car. I shook my head amused. "Of course she did... but I have lessons tomorrow who are mandatory, so I think it is best if I go home after that." Nick still tried to let me come home some nights. He nodded though and hugged me softly. I love you... He had become a little more affectionate over both Juliette and me, and after making fun of that for a while we accepted it. I hugged back. "I love you too..." He smiled before stepping in. Arriving at Nick's house, the smell of Chinese food came towards us. I started to smirk and Nick chuckled. I walked in. "Do I smell Chinese food?" I said as greeting. Juliette looked up with a smile. Your favourite. She only said. I took off my coat and went to help her with the last things, as Nick went upstairs to change his clothes. He always walks away when dinner is ready. Juliette commented with a frown and I giggled. She walked to the stairs and yelled upstairs. Nick, dinner is ready! What are you doing? I sat down and took the glass of water Juliette gave to me. I'm coming. Nick said while his footsteps echoed from the stairs. He gave Juliette a quick kiss and sat down. We just took our first bite when there was a knock on the door. Juliette looked at Nick. Are you expecting someone? She asked and he shook his head, standing up. I'll be right back. He walked to the door when another knock sounded. All right, I am coming. Hold on a second. I shrugged at Juliette. Mom! Nick's voice suddenly sounded and I blinked. Juliette and I both stood up, walking to the door as my mother walked in. She wasn't alone, she held a coat over someone's head, hiding him or her from view. I need your help. There is a lot I have to tell you. She smiled up at me. You're also here, good. I rose my eyebrows. She let go of the big coat and the person under it walked a little further. While Nick and Juliette were looking mostly at my mother, I looked at the unidentified person. When did you get here? Nick asked. The person threw the coat of and turned around. My eyes widened... Adalind! She held a bundle of blankets. Before I could say anything, Nick and Juliette noticed her as well. They gasped and Nick almost sprang in front of Juliette, while Adalind looked shocked. Oh my god. She gasped, taking a step back. Juliette looked like she wanted to punch Adalind right in the face and she took a few steps forward. I quickly stepped in front of them, my back to Adalind. Nick held Juliette back. My mother seemed only mildly surprised. You're safe here. She just said, trying to reassure her. This is my son Nick... Adalind looked everything but reassured. Oh my god... She said again.
I took a step closer to Adalind, knowing I was probably the only one who would protect her here. I'm not safe here, he will kill me! Adalind said towards my mother. My mother shook her head. He won't... She began, but Nick interrupted her. Why did you bring her here? He shouted at her. And she is your mother... Adalind whispered to Nick. You know her? My mother asked Nick. He glared at Adalind. She is the one who put Juliette in a coma. My mother looked back at Adalind. She is that hexenbiest? Nick looked like he was ready to pull his gun. Why did you bring her here? Adalind stalked towards the door. I am not staying here. Mother stopped her. You're not going anywhere. Nick glared at mother now. She is not staying here! Mother held out her hand. You don't understand! I was recruited by the resistance to get her to safety. I took a step closer to Adalind, just to be sure. Safety? Nick asked. Why would you want to bring her to safety? It was Juliette who asked this. I didn't know who she was, only that she and the baby should be protected at all costs. The baby... I stared at the bundle of blankets now, it moved a little. Adalind saw me looking and she smiled shyly at me. The royal baby... Nick hadn't realized yet. What is so valuable about her? I wanted to snap at him. I know what Adalind had done was wrong, but after everything she had been through... But my mother said calmly. Her child... the Verrat were waiting for them outside of Zurich. The royals want this child. I sighed deeply, of course they wanted the child. If I stay here he will kill me. Adalind said. As if I don't have a good reason. Nick snapped back at her. You poisoned Juliette, you tried to kill aunt Marie. My mother turned back to Adalind. You tried to kill my sister? Nick turned back to her. What is to stop her from killing us? He snapped. Juliette turned to Adalind as well. That was one hell of a coma you put me in bitch. I could have died... and by the way, I know what is going on now. Nick glare never left Adalind's face. If she needs to be protected, it will not happen here. Adalind glared back. What are you going to do Nick? Are you going to kill me? And my baby?!! Suddenly the house started to rumble, the glasses on the table moved around. I looked around, as shocked as Juliette and Nick. The end of the spoon next to my plate curled around, some photo frames broke and fell from the wall. As soon as it began... it stopped. "What was that?" I asked. That was the baby. Mother said and my eyes widened. The baby started to cry and we all looked at it. She is hungry... I haven't had the chance to feed her. I turned towards her, ignoring Nick and Juliette. "The blanket is wet, she might be cold." Adalind's eyes immediately turned warmer when she looked at me. "We're going to warm her up okay?" She nodded. I walked towards the stairs, looking back to see if Adalind followed me. Nick stared up at me. You can't trust her Elena! I rolled my eyes. "The baby is going to get sick if we don't do something. Keep your feelings to yourself, I'll do the same." Nick knew how I thought about Adalind, so he didn't discussed it further.
I took the baby over from Adalind and send her to Juliette and Nick's room to wait. I had left some stuff from my past here when I moved, including some of my baby clothes. I quickly grabbed one before disappearing into the bathroom. The baby was so small, maybe a few days old according to her height. From the moment my eyes fell on her, I was in love. She was my niece, and no matter what Nick would say or do, I would protect her... and Adalind. I carefully warmed the girl up and changed her before walking back to where Adalind was waiting. "She is warm now." I said with a smile. The baby smiled as well, cooing at me. I nodded towards the chair. "There is a blanket on that chair over there, can you put it on the bed?" She nodded and did as I asked. I put the baby on the blanket and wrapped it around her. "Here you go..." I smiled. "How old is she?" Adalind bit her lip. I think it has been about ten days. I stroke the baby's cheek. "What is her name?" I asked, but Adalind remained silent. "You haven't named her yet?" She shook her head. There were too many people trying to kill us. I haven't had the chance to think about it. I nodded understandingly and gave her the child back. "Hold her like this." Adalind did as I asked, but suddenly she looked up, real fear in her eyes. What about Nick? He wants me dead. I frowned. "I won't let him. Now get some rest, you're exhausted." I led her to my room. "Here, you can use my room." She showed me a little smile, but it disappeared pretty soon. Why are you even helping me? She asked. I gave her a soft pat on the shoulder. "Whatever you may think, I see of you as family. And this little one is my niece, and I fight for my family." I walked to the door. "Now get some rest, you won't be harmed here. I promise." I closed the door behind myself and walked back downstairs. Nick and Juliette didn't look up from the conversation with my mother. She said something which shocked Nick. Are you kidding me? They can do that? My mother nodded. "Who can do what?" I asked, joining them. A hexenbiest who has lost its powers can regain them. I just rose my eyebrows. "So she got them back?" My mother thought about it for a second. Now it makes sense. It's why her baby is so special. Nick took Adalind's powers but while she was pregnant, she must have gone through contaminatio ritualis. Contaminatio ritualis? Nick asked. For what it is worth... Mother said. It is supposed to be a long and painful experience that restored her powers. Nick sighed deeply. You got to be kidding me. He muttered. Listen to me, the three of you. Mother said. This child has an extraordinary destiny. In the wrong hands it could do great evil. But in the right hands it could do great good. "So we're talking like... 'changing the course of history' kind of person?" I asked and she nodded. Juliette frowned. Maybe it isn't a coincidence that you brought Adalind and her baby back here to Nick. She said, Nick stared at her. I am sorry... what? Juliette placed a fist in her other hand. Carl Jung, synchronicity. When two or more events aren't necessarily causally related but are connected through meaning. I don't care how this is connected. If Adalind got her powers back she is not going to be doing that kid any good so as far as I am concerned the sooner we get her and her destiny to the resistance, the better. I glared at my brother but my mother continued. That is not going to work either. She said. You have been doing this whole thing for the resistance. Nick said. "The child can't belong to the royals or the resistance Nick." I said, understanding. "She has to have a normal childhood, inasmuch as that is possible!" Juliette nodded, just as my mother. How she is raised will make all the difference in who she becomes. She said. "That means..." I said firmly. "Adalind and the baby will stay here..." No! Nick interrupted but I ignored him. "Until we can figure out what to do with them." I finished. Suddenly a window clattered open, the front door flew open and we heard a crashing sound. What the hell? Nick looked around. "Adalind..." I muttered and flew back upstairs, the others followed. "Adalind?!" I opened the door to my room, looking around. She wasn't there, but the baby lay on my bed. I walked to the window. She's gone... My mother said. Juliette picked up the baby. She left her baby? What's wrong with her? Both Nick and I looked out of the window. Um... guys? Juliette suddenly said and we looked back. Instead of holding the baby she held a pillow in her arms. I rose my eyebrows. "I didn't see that coming." I muttered. I told you that baby is powerful. My mother said. We have to get them back. Juliette stared at the pillow before throwing it back on the bed. Where would she go? I sighed deeply, making them all look at me. I had a feeling where she was going. "She is going to the captain." I said.
