I had tucked Angel into bed. We said our prayers and I read her a bedtime story. She closed her eyes and I turned off the lights. The door was quiet when I closed it behind me. The night was quiet all together.
Shawn was upstairs getting his shower. Erik and Luna were chilling in the living room. I'm pretty sure Luna was asleep. Erik was still watching whatever weird documentary was on television. It was one of those old 90s documentaries that came on every so often.
Chris had gone to bed already. He hardly came out of his room. When he did, it was usually to get something to eat but even then he went straight back downstairs. Today, I had seen him maybe twice.
Everything was calm. The night was cool. The weather was beginning to change. In Alabama, there really was no telling what the weather was going to do. It could be December and it could be 70 degrees outside, but this was typical fall weather. The leaves were dropping faster than we could rake them. The wind was mostly to blame.
A piercing scream echoed from downstairs and all around us. Emily darted down the stairs to Chris's room. The screaming faded into quiet sobs. No one left their spots. We all merely watched the downstairs door Emily had left wide open.
It hurt to hear Chris in so much pain. As he screamed, I sat in Shawn's room with my hands over my ears. I tried to block him out but I couldn't. I pulled my knees closer to my chest and prayed for him to stop. I couldn't stand to hear him screaming like that.
