No one saw Erik for a couple of days. When he did come home, he was tired looking. I could see the bags under his eyes. His clothes were filthy and reeked of alcohol and smoke. I could see the track marks on his arms. It was obvious he wasn't just drinking while he was away.
When I opened the door, I hardly recognized him. He looked older, so much older. He wasn't the same Erik I met at the bowling alley. He wasn't even Erik anymore. Far from it. I didn't know this person.
"Let me in," he ordered. I gripped the door.
"Can't you even muster up a please," I snapped back. Erik stepped towards me and shoved me out of the way into the wall.
"Jackass!" I yelled after him. He flipped me off and continued to his room downstairs.
I didn't see Erik again until he came back upstairs with his bag packed. He brushed past me and out the door without a word. No goodbye. No nothing. Just the sound of the door slamming shut behind him, hopefully hitting him as it did so.
Nobody heard from Erik for a few months after that.
