Chris was in his room. I was sitting on his bed. We were talking about our days. Chris and I had become good friends. We often sat and talked to one another. Sometimes we just sat in silence and enjoyed each other's company. He became like a brother to me.
Chris was getting ready for bed. He took off his shirt and I stopped mid sentence. There were so many scars on his back that it stunned me.
"What happened?" I asked. Chris quickly put his other shirt on.
"Nothing," he said taking off his shoes. He threw his shoes under the bed.
"You can tell me. I won't tell," I whisper. I just wanted to know. Chris stopped what he was doing and looked up at me.
"It might freak you out."
"If you knew the things I've seen," I smiled. Chris laughed a little.
"Alright, I'll make you a deal," he paused, "You tell me yours, I'll tell you mine." He sat down on the bed.
"Only if you let me draw you," I countered.
Chris smiled and nodded. I reached out my hand and Chris took it and shook it. He got off the bed and lifted his shirt exposing the scars and fading bruises on the front of his chest. He sat still and let me draw him for awhile. After that we swapped stories all night.
With everything that has happened to him, I wonder if Chris will ever truly feel safe again.
