Chris came wondering into the yard one night. Shawn and Erik were watching a movie with Cal in the living room. I was in the floor helping Angel with her homework. Luna was painting her toes by the door. Cal was the one that saw him from the window. We didn't know what was happening when he jumped up and ran out of the door.

Cal wrapped is arm around Chris's waist. He wrapped Chris's arm around his neck and guided him into the house. He staggered in and to the guest bedroom. Chris's arm was swinging limp at his side. The blood on his head was cracked down to his ear and in his brown hair.

Cal wanted to take him to the hospital but Chris refused. He kept saying no hospital, no hospital. Cal set his arm as best as he could and cleaned his head.  As soon as Chris's head hit the pillow, he was out like a light. He slept through the night and into the next day. He was so tired. Did he ever get any sleep?

We all took turns checking on him. Emily would sit in the room with him and read her book or sew on her quilt. She said she wanted to be in the room in case he woke up so he wouldn't be alone.

Chris stayed with us after that. He said he couldn't go back there anymore. We all assumed that there was home for a lack of a better word.

"I'm so tired," I heard him tell Cal. I knew from his voice he didn't mean physically. He had given up. He was exhausted from fighting whatever he had been battling.

When I looked at Chris or thought about him, I thought about Shawn. Chris was broken. Someone had taken him and smashed him into little bitty pieces. I couldn't help but wonder if Shawn would have turned out like that if he hadn't met Cal or Emily.

Cal and Emily told him that he could stay as long as he wanted. Not even Cal was gonna tell him to get out at this point. Chris moved into the guest room. Erik gave him the room and slept on the couch when he was over. That's when Chris's nightmares started.
