Shawn got really sick.He would have these awful coughing fits. He would be so weak and nauseous. One night in particular got Cal worried. Shawn couldn't keep anything down and could barely stand up.
Cal ended up driving him to the hospital. The doctors on call that night admitted him and started IVs and gave him some medicine to keep what was left in his stomach there. Cal told me that he was going to be fine, but he didn't look fine to me. He looked horrible. He was so weak and pale.
I was so scared. I wanted to hold his hand but I couldn't bring myself to do it. I thought that if I touched him, he would break into a million pieces. Whatever was wrong with Shawn had really taken it's toll on him.
When Shawn was put in a room, I asked Cal to call Momma and Daddy. I was going to stay with Shawn. I couldn't leave him. What if something happened and I wasn't there? That thought scared the thought out of me.
When everyone was gone and Shawn was asleep, I cried. I held Shawn's hand and cried. Shawn heard me crying and sat up. I put my hands to his face. I had to see his eyes. If I looked into his eyes, I knew everything would be okay. All my worries and fears would vanish. Shawn put his hand behind head and pulled me closer to him, forehead to forehead. He used his other hand to wipe away my tears. I lost it. I threw my arms around him and started bawling.
He kept telling me that everything was okay, but I couldn't help it. I was so afraid of losing him that everything else just stopped.
The doctors ran all sorts of test but nothing showed up. They thought it could have been a stomach bug but the stomach bug wouldn't have done that to him. One look at Shawn said something was wrong. Even Cal was stunned.
Shawn was released from the hospital, but he wasn't better. At home, Shawn would sit on the couch or the chair and hold his star of David necklace in his hands.
