Erik. That name irritates me, but I must suck it up. Cal and Emily decided to give him another chance.
"He needs help,"Emily told me. Cal didn't say anything. Something tells me he's about to give up too. Erik, you better not screw this up or you won't have a home to come back too. Your ice is wearing thin.
A knock on the door pulls me out of my thoughts. I put the dishes I'm holding on the table next to Angel. She's coloring in the book Chris sent her in the mail. I give her a kiss on the cheek then continue to the door. I know who it is and it makes me not want to answer it, but I put on my face then answer it anyway.
"What sewer pipe did you crawl out of?" I ask Erik. He smiles and for a brief moment I thought it was him. The old Erik before the drinking and the drugs.
"What sewer did you bath in? Erik shoots back. The old Erik? I missed the old Erik. I smile back.
"Ain't you going to let me?" Erik leans against the door frame. I couldn't believe it. He was Erik again, not that monster anymore. Erik had finally come home.I threw my arms around him then moved out of the way to let him in.
"Erik," Angel yelled as she ran up to him. Erik put his bag down and picked her up. He greeted her with his usual hello monkey.
It was like he never left. Looking at them together, it was like those months never existed. Erik was Erik again. Smiling and playing with Angel like he had done so long ago. That image made me glad that I let him in. I couldn't believe I didn't even want to open the door.
Cal gave Erik his old room back under the condition that he follows the rules. He had to be home every night by 8:30. No drinking, no drugs, and if he was running late he had to call. Also he had to keep going to meetings.
Erik agreed and moved into his room that night. It felt nice to have him home again. Cracking his stupid jokes and kicking my ass on the playstation. Having him at the dinner table again. It felt like my family was starting to come back together again. I felt something I thought I had lost. Hope.
Chris came to visit a few days later. It was wonderful. My family was together.
