I wasted no time running to Cal's house. I had to get Shawn help and Cal was the first thing that popped into my head. I ran the whole way. I was out of breath when I reached his door but that didn't stop me from banging on the door.
"Cal! Emily!" I shouted. They had to hurry. Shawn was bleeding and I had left him alone. I pounded on the door again. "Cal! Emily!"
The tears were starting to come. I couldn't help it. My heart was racing. My hands were shaking. My mind feeling with thoughts of Shawn dying and it would be all my fault because I couldn't get someone to answer the door.
Emily opened the door. She took one look at me and grabbed my by the arms. "What is? What's wrong?'
"Shawn's hurt really bad! You gotta get Cal!" I cried.
"Emily pulled me inside. She ran down the hallway. She came back with her keys and a first aid kit in her hands with Cal putting on his shirt behind her.
"Go get in the car. Go!" Emily rushed me out of the house. We rode over to Shawn's house. Shawn was in the floor where I had left him propped against the leg of the kitchen table. Angel was holding onto his left arm and crying.
Cal wasted no time getting Shawn up. He got him up in one of the chair and proceeded to lift up his shirt to view the wound.
"It's not that deep but it's still going to uncomfortable." Cal reassured us. Emily picked up Angel and carried her to her room. She was trying to distract her from Cal cleaning Shawn's wound. A few minutes later, I could hear Angel playing with her toys and Emily laughing.
Cal gets started wiping the blood off Shawn's back and stitching it up. "How did this happen?" he asked. His usual calm tone now laced with anger and frustration.
"My mom," Shawn admits, "wanted money. I couldn't give it to her." Shawn looks down at his feet. He won't look at me or anywhere else. Just his feet. "I need it to buy Angel's food."
Cal paused for a moment and shook his head. He continued to stitch Shawn's wound together. We all sat in silence for the remainder of the procedure. After Cal had bandaged Shawn's shoulder, he reached into his pocket and pulled out his wallet. He took three hundred dollars out and put it directly in Shawn's hand.
Shawn shook his head and tried to hand it back to Cal. "Cal I can't take your money."
Cal held up his hand and pushed Shawn's away. "You can and you will."
Shawn tried to give the money back to Cal and Emily but neither one of them would take it. Shawn tried but no one would take it. He eventually accepted defeat and put the money in his pocket.
