Shawn gathered my pages and put them back in my composition book, which is you. Salty tears streamed down my cheeks. Cal gave you to me. How could Justin have treated you like that? What is wrong with these people? Why do people feel the urge to destroy things that do not belong to them!
"It'll be okay," Shawn smiles. He's trying to help me but it's not working. "We can tape them back in." Still not working.
Your pages are all ripped and torn. Your spine is damaged. Pages are falling out of the back because of the ones ripped out of the back. The pictures that I had placed inside your crevices have fallen out and are nowhere to be seen.
"Where's the picture of Angel?" I frantically start looking on the ground next to me.
Shawn gets up and starts looking around the stadium and the track. "I got it!" Shawn yells from the other side of the field. My chest the knot in my chest eases a little.
Shawn takes his time. When he finally returns to my side, I cannot help but notice the way he is looking at the picture. Sadness and happiness all in one glance.
I had taken the picture of Angel and created a background out of an old card I found. Angel's precious face was the center of attention. She was wrapped in a hospital blanket and held in Renee's arms. The little green iv tube sticking out of her arm visible. She was so little.
"Where did you get this," Shawn smiles. His smile hiding the mix feelings that are swirling around inside him. He can smile all he wants with me, I know it isn't real. I've been with Shawn long enough to know when he's lying even with a smile plastered on his face.
"I stole it," I admitted. I had stolen it in a way. I had found it in the house while I was cleaning. I figured Renee wouldn't miss it. I had no pictures of Angel or of Shawn for that matter. I just wanted a picture of them. Pictures are all people have sometimes. They are memories and I didn't want to forget.
"Can you make me a copy?" Shawn asked sitting next to me. I nod.
"I need one of you," I say pushing my shoulder into Shawn's.
"I think I can do something about that."
My mind returns to you. Your pages and the damage that has been done. Shawn takes my hand then reaches over and takes you out of my lap.
"It's not that bad. A little tape, some glue, and boom. Right as rain." He puts his arm around my shoulder and pulls me closer to him. He kisses my hair. My heart beat slows. My trembling begins to fade. My breath begins to calm. Everything will be okay.
What a goof.
Shawn stayed with me until Daddy came to pick me up. I was so happy Shawn was back. We walked around the track. His fingers fit perfectly in mine. I wish more people could see past his exterior. Shawn would fight for you. All people had to do was get to know him.
That's the problem isn't it. Most people didn't want to get to know him. They avoided him like the plague. Even my parents though Shawn was trouble at first, but when they got to know him they say what I saw.
