Shawn was no longer here. The machines were doing everything for him. The doctors told us that we needed to call in family. I called Shawn's parents but no one called me back or ever answers. Erik and Luna came as soon as they could. Chris never left even as the hours ticked by he stayed with me. He held my hand, but I couldn't feel it. I couldn't feel anything.
One after another everyone came in to Shawn's room to say their goodbyes. Heartfelt words of love and tears of aching hearts. First Emily then Cal. Luna then Erik. After Erik left, Cal brought Angel in. Her crying hurt me the most. I squeezed Shawn's hand tighter. It was my turn now.
"Do you want me to leave while you say goodbye?" Chris asked. I shook my head.
"I can't!" I sobbed. I tightened my grip on Shawn's hand again. I don't want to let him go. I can't let him go. How could they ask that of me? How could they ask me to do this?
Chris moved his chair closer to mine. He wrapped his arm around mine and took my hand again. He gave it a gently squeeze.
"Don't tell him goodbye. Tell him something else," he whispered.
"We were gonna finish school and get married. He wanted to be a counselor. Did you know that?" I asked. Chris whispered no. "He wanted to help kids. We were going to get a house. We wanted a farm in the country. We both didn't like people. We wanted our own little patch. Shawn always said you didn't need a full moon for this town."
I lift Shawn's hand with mine and lay my head on it. A noise escapes me. A twisted sob morphed with a scream. The tears flow more freely now. Chris hands me a Kleenex from the box a nurse left.
"We were gonna get married Shawn.......... you promised. You promised me Shawn." I coughed. I was crying so hard I feared I might make myself sick. Chris rubbed my back but it brought no comfort to me.
"Don't stop Lexi."
"What am I supposed to do Shawn? What am I supposed to do? I don't know what to do. I can't do this. I love you! I love you so much! I will always be right here." I kissed his hand and placed it to my face. "Always."
