It was the day of the next scan and Jac and Fletch were arguing in the waiting room about whether they wanted to find out the sex of the baby. Jac was for and Fletch definitely against
"Why can't it be a surprise Jac? We didn't find out for any of my four, it's part of the fun"
Jac sighed exasperatedly "I'm a control freak Fletch - you knew that when we got together"
"Yeah about surgery, about the ward but not about something like this"
"I need certainty and order in my life Fletch. It's the only way I have been able to cope over the years. Being pregnant means I have no control over my body and I just want to be able to prepare for this baby properly because I didn't want Emma when she was born and this time I want it to be perfect" she paused fiercely wiping a tear away "shit"
"Hey come on" he wrapped his arms round her "I'm sorry. I didn't know that about Emma. I mean I knew she was poorly but I didn't know that's how you felt"
Jac sniffed "Yeah well it's not something you broadcast and god I love her so much now"
They were called in shortly afterwards
Once again Jac held Fletch's hand as she lay on the bed, both their heads turned to the screen
"The baby is very active"the sonographer said
"No kidding" Jac replied sarcastically
"Would you like to know the sex?"
Jac and Fletch looked at each other. Fletch squeezed her hand and kissed her forehead before answering
"Yes, we would like to know please"
Not for the first time Jac was overwhelmed by her love for this nan who accepted her, and her past completely. Accepted the way the past had shaped her
"Thank you" she mouthed as they both turned their attention back to the screen
After taking a few still shots and measurements   the sonographer spoke
"It's a boy" she smiled
Jac uncharacteristically burst into tears
"With the way he's been kicking he's definitely gonna play for England"
"Over my dead body" laughed Jac
"Oh shut up you" Fletch said affectionately
They went down to their bench with lunch after the scan
"A little boy eh?" Fletch mused
"Any thoughts on names?"asked Jac
"Not really. You?"
"Well whilst I was imprisoned for those two weeks I was thinking about names"
"Go on"
"Ok. Look I think Rafaello is a bit, you know out there but what about Luc.?"
"As in Di Lucca?"
"Exactly"
Fletch paused as he tried to swallow the lump in his throat
"I love it" he said quietly "and I love you" he leaned over and pecked her on the lips
"Raf is up there somewhere absolutely pissing himself at this pickle we've got ourselves into. But he would be the happiest bloke on earth for us to be naming our son after him"
"It's not too much?" She questioned "being reminded every day of what you've lost?"
"I think just the opposite. It means there will be a new beginning and hope"
"Soppy git" Jac teased "and I wondered about Essie for godmother?"
"Perfect"
