CHAPTER 1

MAURINE'S P.O.V.

“We need to talk, Sweetheart.” My father, Winson, said.

“Why, Dad? Is there a problem?” I asked, frowning.

“Well, I don't know if this is a problem but just hear me out, okay? It's not bad anyway.”

I nodded.

“Tara sa opisina ko.”  aya niya sa'kin saka nauna ng naglakad.

Sinundan ko siya sa kaniyang opisina. Siyempre curious ako sa gustong sabihin sa'kin ni Daddy.

“So as I was saying,” bahagya pang pinutol ni Daddy ang kaniyang sasabihin. “I have a friend, you knew David Varcancel, right?” I nodded. “He wants you and his Son to get married as— ”

“What?! Dad, I think I didn't hear you right. Ano pong sinabi mo?”

“You and Luther Varcancel will get married as soon as possible.”

OH MY GOD!! This can't be.

“Stop kidding, Daddy. It's not funny anymore.” Totoo naman. Hindi na nakakatuwa, actually, kinikilabutan ako sa mga pinagsasabi ni Daddy.

“I'm not kidding, Hija. Kaylangan mong pakasalan si Luther.”

“What the hell?! Dad, I'm sorry. Alam mong basta utos mo, sinusunod ko pero this time, Pasensiyahan tayo, Daddy, pero hindi ko susundin ang utos mo.”

Hindi ako papayag na basta nalang akong ipakasal sa taong hindi ko naman kakilala.

“Look, Sweetheart, You have to do this, if it's not for me, then do it for your late Grandpa.”

I hate it every time he's using my Lolo para lang sundin ko ang gusto niya. Alam niya kasing mahal na mahal ko si lolo pero nakakalungkot lang dahil maaga siyang binawi sa amin ni Papa God.

“Dad, Stop. Ayaw ko ng pag-usapan ito, okay? ayaw kong magpakasal sa lalaking 'yon. Haven't you heard about his reputation with a lot of women? Dad, He's a womanizer for heaven's sake yet you still want me to marry him? magalit ka na sa'kin, Dad, pero hinding hindi ko gagawin ang kagustuhan mo kahit gamitin mo pa sa'kin si Lolo.”

“Hija, Just give him a chance, okay? He's not that bad Like what everyone says. He's a kind person and you'll know him even better if you'll marry him.”

“How could I marry someone like him, Dad? How do you expect me to get married to a man like him? I don't even want to meet him and now you're insisting that I should marry him? Dad, Let me remind you, I'm just twenty-four years of age... I'm not yet ready to enter married life.”

“Tamang tama lang ang edad mo para magpakasal, Hija, and besides, Hindi mo naman poproblemahin ang pera kapag nagpakasal ka dahil mayaman si Luther. Siya ang tagapag-mana sa ari-arian ng mga Varcancel kaya alam kong hindi ka maghihirap sa puder niya.”

“Why are you doing this to me, Dad? Masama ba akong anak para basta mo nalang ibigay ang kamay ko sa Luther na 'yon?” I'm shaking my head in disappointment.

“Hija, please don't be stubborn. I know what I'm doing and this is for your own good so why not give it a try?”

“You want me to marry him? Then Fine. I will marry him but don't expect me to just obey and follow whatever his damn rules are. My Life, My Rules.”

I saw a glimpse of happiness in my father's eyes. I just can't believe that this day will be going to happen. Pipilitin akong ipakasal sa taong hindi ko naman gusto.

“Thanks, Sweetheart. Don't worry, I'm just here. Ano man ang mangyari, nandito lang ako para suportahan ka. Babawiin kita sa oras na sinaktan ka niya.”
