[Y/N] spent the rest of the afternoon with Kakashi, the two catching up and talking about their new jobs. She had really missed spending time with him. That evening, he and her other friends treated her to dinner (where she vehemently rejected any more alcohol). After dinner, she bid her friends all farewell and headed home. She was still tired from last night and her day had been longer than she'd realized.
She just settled in to bed when she heard a knock on the door. A quick peek at the clock told her it was just after ten. Anyone coming this late would be a messenger for her father, sending for her for a mission. She sighed and debated not even answering, but a second knock at the door told her this person wouldn't be leaving.
She stood up, pulling her robe over her night clothes before heading to answer the door. She flipped on her porch light before pulling the door open. She couldn't help the smile that spread across her face. Standing at her door, holding a bouquet of flowers, was Genma. He was grinning sheepishly at her, senbon tucked between his teeth. "Happy birthday, baby."
She couldn't help but to throw herself forward into his arms, wrapping her own around his neck. He pulled her close and tucked his head against hers, breathing her in. She smelled of strawberries and vanilla and it always drove him crazy. "I'm sorry I'm late."
She shook her head, neglecting to let him go. "Better late than never."
Genma hugged her for just a moment longer before pulling back and handing her the bouquet of flowers. He'd stood in the shop for thirty minutes trying to decided which ones were good enough. He'd seen the bright red roses, but they were so cliché and she'd told him so before. He finally decided on some purple lilies, which he knew to be her favorite. The shop keep had watched him stand there for so long that she took pity on the man, taking the flowers and doing them up in a large bouquet with a few other flowers. He thanked her several times over before rushing out of the store and straight to [Y/N]'s apartment.
She finally pulled back, taking the flowers and thanking him. "You really didn't have to, but they're beautiful. Lilies are my favorite! I see you remembered."
"Of course I remembered. Now, are you ready?"
"Ready for what?"
"I'm taking you out for your birthday."
"Genma, it's after ten at night. There's nothing open!"
"Do you trust me?"
"Yeah."
"Then go put something on and come with me."
[Y/N] shook her head and smiled at him but turned to go slip some clothes on anyway. Only Genma. She quickly placed the flowers in some water and went to her room. She wasn't sure what he had planned this late, so she didn't know what to wear. In the end, she settled for some black pants and a plain, long sleeved shirt. She combed through her hair before making her way into the living room where Genma stood patiently by the door.
"I wasn't sure what to wear so I hope this is okay."
"You look gorgeous baby."
He put his hands on her waist and pulled in for a kiss. She wondered how she ever got lucky enough to snag someone like Genma. He pulled back and turned toward the door, opening it and leading her out. Suddenly he stopped and spun around to face her. "Before I forget..." He pulled his bandana off of his head and moved to tie it around her eyes. "No peeking."
Then he lifted her up on to his back, carrying her.
