"Okay, okay, stop whining." Genma laughed, letting [Y/N] down and making her huff. "You can take the bandana off."

She reached up to pull it off and was met with a sight she'd never expected.

They were on top of the village wall, on the far side of town, where there weren't very many lights. In front of them was a blanket and two pillows, and a few candles. In the middle of the blanket was a tiny wrapped box with a bow on it and more flowers laying around the blanket. She'd barely taken in the sight before Genma wrapped his arms around her from behind. He rested his head on her shoulder and whispered in her ear. "Look up, baby."

She did as she was told and gasped. She'd never seen so many stars in her life. The smile that spread across her face was big and bright, her eyes glittering in the moonlight and Genma was sure he'd never loved anyone the way he loved the girl in front of him. He placed a kiss on her cheek and whispered a quick "I love you" to her. She turned her head to look at him and kissed him before whispering a quiet "thank you" back to him.

He gently guided her to the blanket, sitting down himself before pulling her down to sit in front of him. He pulled her back against him and pointed to the box next to them. "That's your birthday present. Open it."

"You didn't have to get me anything. You've really done enough."

"Just open the box."

She reached forward and grabbed it. It was small, fitting in her palm. It was wrapped exceptionally well, the bow on top tied perfectly, and she knew immediately that Genma's mother was the one who'd wrapped it. She chuckled to herself, the idea of Genma trying to wrap this himself was just too funny.

She pulled the bow off and gently ripped at the paper and revealed a small velvet box. Her heart started to race as she recognized it as a ring box. Surely Genma wasn't doing what she thought he was doing. They hadn't been together but just a little over a month...

"Open it." Genma whispered.

She again obeyed him, though she did so slowly. Her fingers gently grasped the top of the box, enjoying the feel of the smooth velvet beneath her fingertips. Finally, she popped the box open and gasped again.

The first thing she noticed was the red opal jewel in the middle. On either side of it was a smaller crystal, helping accentuate the bigger stone in the center. All of the gems were set into a thin silver band. The ring was simple and gorgeous, shining in the light of the candles and the stars above them.

"Do you like it?"

Genma's voice startled her ever so slightly, as she sat there staring at the ring in her hands. "Gen..."

"I know it's not much, but I saw it in a shop a few weeks ago and it made me think of you. It looks like fire in the middle and you are Hell to reckon with, baby." He laughed a little, kissing her head. "I had to get it for you."

"It's gorgeous Genma."

He reached around her and pulled the ring out of the box, slipping it onto her right ring finger. "Now, don't get crazy on me, it's not an engagement ring."

[Y/N] smacked his arm playfully. "I'm not crazy!"

"Yeah, okay." He said back sarcastically, teasing her. "Don't worry though, I love you anyway."

He laid back, using the pillows to prop himself up at an angle, and pulled her back into him. They laid together for a while in a peaceful silence, staring at the stars. It wasn't until [Y/N]'s breathing slowed that Genma realized she'd fallen asleep. He chuckled to himself and kissed her forehead. He pulled back and whispered to her sleeping form. "It's not an engagement ring now, but I'm gonna marry you someday baby."
