[Y/N] sat in the jonin stand-by station with Asuma.

In the last year and a half since her break up with Genma, [Y/N] and Asuma had gotten much closer than before. He comforted her after she and Genma ended things (though secretly he was a little relieved). He stood by her when she swore off dating for a while (also something he was secretly happy about). She just needed time to get over Genma.

Asuma also came to terms with Kakashi's feelings for [Y/N]. He realized [Y/N] would eventually take an interest in settling down and starting a family and, if it came down to it, he liked the idea of Kakashi with her better than he did Genma. Kakashi was more mature and Asuma knew him better than he knew Genma.

Surprisingly enough, after a few months of awkward exchange, [Y/N] and Genma were back to being friends. Sure, they weren't as close, but something was better than nothing. They were both mostly back to their joking, carefree selves again (though Genma now had the ability to make jokes about having seen her naked and he rarely allowed the opportunity to pass without taking it). Genma himself had also sworn off dating after they broke up. For him, [Y/N] really was the one and he wasn't interested in anyone else. He'd stayed true to his word even now.

"[Y/N], when you were put into a training squad, who was your sensei?" Asuma asked, lighting a cigarette. [Y/N] refocused on the present as she rolled her eyes at the smoke that he blew out and waved it away. She wished, in vain, that her brother would stop smoking, being firmly disgusted with the habit herself. "Er, Shikaku Nara. Why?"

"I thought so. I've got his son in my squad this year and I was wondering—"

"Shikamaru?! He graduated??" She sat forward abruptly. [Y/N] had met Shikamaru more than a few times when he was younger, mostly by happenstance as his father trained her. She quite liked Shikamaru, as he was fun to tease. He grew to be like a younger brother to her, though she hasn't seen him in some time now, at least not since he'd started the academy and she had joined ANBU. "You sound surprised." Asuma said, arching one of his eyebrows.

"I am surprised. He's so... well, lazy."

"Hm. That answers that. Anyway, Iruka passed him and he's my student now, so I guess I'll have to work that out."

"Good luck with that. Who else did you get assigned to?"

"Hmm. Ino Yamanaka and Choji Akimichi—don't laugh."

[Y/N] hid her face behind her hand but couldn't help but to let a few chuckles escape. "I can't help it! I think you're in for it, Asuma!"

"Whatever. I still think I fair better than Kakashi."

"Oh, who did Kakashi get?"

"Sakura Haruno, Naruto Uzumaki, and—"

"Naruto graduated too?!"

"Barely. Iruka let him scrape by I think. Something about Naruto having surprising skill with shadow clones."

"Or not so surprising, given his, er, situation. Who else?"

"Sasuke Uchiha."

"Sasuke... I wonder how he's doing from time to time, since... well, that's done and over now."

"I still couldn't believe it when I found out. Itachi..."

"Yeah, well. If I ever see him again then I'm gonna lay him out."

"You don't miss him?"

"I miss who I thought Itachi was. But the kid that murdered his family? No. Not at all. Besides, I have new friends."

"ANBU friends." Asuma said, emphasis an ANBU. He was still bitter over the fact that their father had actually let her into ANBU anyway. After what happened to their brother and he still allowed it? That was one big reason Asuma left in the first place a few years back. He refused to stay and watch his family tear itself apart, one member at a time.

"Not all of them are ANBU."

"Kakashi was ANBU when you met him. Tenzo, or whatever his name is, ANBU. Yugao, ANBU. Hell, even Genma was ANBU."

"Genma doesn't count. He was only up for a few missions. And so what if a few of them are ANBU. Kurenai isn't. Izumo and Kotetsu aren't and neither are Hayate or Iruka. See? I have other friends, Asuma."

"Right. Well look, we're all having to meet our new teams here soon. Do you wanna meet up tonight for dinner?"

"Kurenai and I are supposed to train together when she's finished with her squad. She's trying some new genjutsu and we're going to work to figure out the weak spots. Why don't you just meet us over at the training grounds after and then we'll go to dinner?"

"Sounds like a plan. Are you going to invite you know who?" Asuma grinned.

[Y/N] rolled her eyes again. "Drop it Asuma. I've told you time and time again that I don't think anything will ever come of that. He's just not interested... or at least he hasn't been since me and Genma got together." She whispered the last part but he still heard it.

"You don't know that for sure. You should try talking to him about it. And besides, whatever happens, it can't be any worse that your stint with Genma."

"It wasn't that bad!"

"I never liked it."

"Noted. If you remember, that's done and over with."

"Especially the friends with benefits thing, yeah, my ass. Are you kidding? I still can't believe you two slept togeth—"

"Seriously? That was two years ago and you were so pissed about that. Why are you bringing it back up?"

"I was pissed because he's so much older than you and you two were apparently doing it like rabbits. But now it's over and it's pretty funny to annoy you with. Seriously though, if you've liked Kakashi since you met him, why did that even happen with Genma? Why wouldn't you have gone for Kakashi?"

"Well after four years of pining pathetically for him in ANBU, I guess I decided that it was never going to happen. Plus, Genma was the first one that was around and willing. Now, please just go before you're late." [Y/N] said, rubbing her temple and waving her brother off. He smirked and stood, sauntering off smugly. "Well, you never know. He might be interested..."
