"Kakashi, thanks for letting me stay—oh. You're not Kakashi."
"I'm not."
"Get out."
"[Y/N], listen to me—"
"Get out."
"It's not what you think—"
"Get the hell out, Genma!" She yelled at him. He stepped inside and shut the door behind him. Then he moved to stand in front of it so that neither of them could open it back.
"Would you shut up and listen to me?" He asked gently.
[Y/N] crossed her arms angrily, but her heart pounded in her chest. She had done her best to avoid him for the last two days.
And with today being their would-be anniversary, she couldn't help it. She finally went to Asuma, who immediately picked up on her sour attitude and demanded to know what happened. When he stormed out angrily, she gave up and came over to Kakashi's to sit and sulk. She knew Kakashi wouldn't say no to her—he had about as much power to do so as her brother. Kakashi (regrettably) had a few errands to run for the day, but he told her she was more than welcome to stay. She nodded and thanked him and made him promise not to tell Genma where she was if he seen him out.
And yet, [Y/N] thought, he must've still told him. Genma's got his freaking key.
"I love you." Genma said, breaking the silence between them. They'd been locked in a staring battle for the last few minutes and he couldn't take it anymore.
"Don't say that to me."
"I love you." He said it again, knowing he was getting to her now.
"No you don't!" She pushed forward and shoved him. It was like a dam breaking when her hands hit his chest and everything came flooding out. Her anger and sadness and hurt and the only thing she could do was continue to hit his chest. Finally, Genma grabbed her hands. She pulled as hard as she could, trying to get out of his grasp. Finally out of options, Genma pulled her into him roughly and slammed his lips to hers. He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her flush against him and trapping her arms between their bodies.
When he pulled back, she dropped her head against his chest, tears rolling down her face. He stood there and listened to her breathing before he finally just decided to go for it.
"I was going to ask you to marry me."
[Y/N] sniffled and looked up at him. "What?"
He smiled sadly down at her, hating that he was the cause of the tears rolling down her cheeks. He nodded and pressed his lips to her forehead, pulling them both down so that they sat on the floor. He held her close and she rested her head against his chest and listened as he explained everything. The perfume, the receipts, the lateness, the lying, all of it. He finally neared the end of his story and reached into his pocket, grabbing the small box there.
He pulled it out and held it out in front of her. "This is not at all how I imagined doing this, but [Y/N], baby, I love you. Will you marry me?"
He used his thumb and popped the box open, revealing a gorgeous engagement ring. She held her head up to look at it more levelly, her lips parting slightly. Genma watched her anxiously. Finally, she reached forward and closed the box. She turned her head and pressed a kiss to his neck. Genma's eyebrows furrowed, trying to figure out what was happening.
"I can't Genma." She finally whispered.
"Are you still upset with me?" He whispered back, afraid his voice would crack.
"No, I'm not upset Gen. I'm just not ready to get married. I'm twenty years old... This must be what Asuma meant."
"What?"
"He told me that because of our age difference, you'd want more before I would. I didn't think anything of it, but here we are."
"No, no, no. Now look, just because we're engaged doesn't mean we have to get married now too. We can wait—"
"Do you want to wait?"
Genma sighed. "...No, I don't. I want to make you my wife. I wanna settle down. I can't wait any more."
"Exactly. I'm sorry Genma."
"No, it's okay. You're right." Genma pulled back and moved to stand up. He held his hand out to her to help her up. He shoved the ring back into his pocket and then put his hands in his pockets too. He looked at her and flashed her a sad smile. She returned the same smile. "I'm so sorry, Gen."
He shrugged. "It's okay. You're honest. I'm glad."
Genma turned toward the door but stopped. He turned back to face her, cupping her cheeks. He kissed her deeply, putting everything he could into it. "Sorry. I just had to do that one more time."
He turned back and opened the door. He stepped outside and chuckled a little. "This doesn't feel right."
She shook her head. "It doesn't. But what break up does?"
He nodded his head. "It's funny. I want to settle down and move forward in my life, maybe get Ma to stop nagging me about finding a wife," He laughed humorlessly. "But the idea of moving forward with anyone else... It's lost on me. I don't want to marry anyone else. I don't want to come home to anyone else. I love you, baby."
"I love you, Genma."
He looked at her one more time before turning making his way down the corridor to the stairs. His heart was pounding and it felt like it cracked more and more with each thud. She was the girl of his dreams and she was no longer his.
