Squad Zero remained close and quiet until the others had left. They stayed back to pick up clues. Tenzo had ordered another split, sending Genma and Raido back to the cavern where Sasori had died while he and [Y/N] stayed back to see if they could find anything left of Deidara. At this point, anything would be better than nothing.

When they'd been unable to find anything, remains of his clay or his arm or even something that would have his scent, they gave up and made their way back to the cavern too. They had just come within fifty meters of the entrance when they heard the fighting. Raido was thrown up and back into the trees, hitting one with a loud thud.

"What is this? What's going on?" Tenzo demanded, both he and [Y/N] rushing to help him up.

"We had just made it back here and we seen these two guys poking around. We kept our distance, but that one—the one with the mask—he must've sensed us anyway or something. He tripped but he managed to attack first. A fight broke out just as they were leaving."

[Y/N] scanned the area quickly, finding that Genma was trapped between the wall and some creepy plant-looking guy. The one with the mask was behind him, rambling and yelling wildly. He didn't appear to have any wits about him, but it was better to be safe than sorry.

"Maneuver seven!" Tenzo called and the team put the motion into play. They moved effortlessly around, dodging attacks and managing to keep the two Akatsuki from taking anything too valuable. [Y/N] was getting fed up and she was getting tired of the fighting, but her breaking point was when Genma had been knocked into the wall. He had taken the blow pretty hard and she could tell he was in pain and in no shape to retaliate against the Akatsuki that approached him, the one with the mask.

She leaped forward toward the one with the mask, kunai ready. He moved out of the way (only because he tripped again) and sent her crashing into Genma, who had just stood back up himself. They were knocked into the wall again, [Y/N]'s kunai coming dangerously close to cutting her own arm. The one with the mask approached quickly, ready with weapons of his own. Genma pushed [Y/N] off of him and rolled to wrap himself around her protectively.

"Four ANBU. We are not here for this now. Let's go." The one plant looking one said, melting into the ground. The one with the mask yelled out before tripping again and disappearing. Genma ripped his mask off and angrily threw it on the ground.

"[Y/N], what the hell was that?" Genma asked her, a little more harshly than he'd intended.

"Excuse me? That was me saving your ass!"

"Saving my ass? You could've just gotten yourself killed! You could've cost us the mission!"

"Better than costing us your life!"

"You're so fucking stubborn, you know that?"

Genma grabbed her by the arm and yanked her closer. He grabbed her face, knocking her mask off too, and kissed her roughly, putting every emotion he could into it. He wanted her to know how angry he was, but he needed her to know that he still loved her so much. "So stupid." He mumbled against her mouth, drawing her in closer.

When he finally let go, he couldn't help admiring how beautiful she looked. Her hair was wild from the fight they'd just endured, her eyes held back fire and anger, and her lips were swollen and puffy from his own assault. She furrowed her eyebrows and glared at him. He shook his head, breathing hard still, and pulled her into his arms. He wrapped her up and put her head on his chest. "Dammit. Don't you ever put yourself at risk like that again."

She didn't dare pull away from him in that moment. She let him hold her against his chest, his heart pounding so hard she swore she could feel it pump against her cheek. His breathing was ragged and unsteady as he placed another soft kiss against her hair. He knew it was wrong. The entire moment was wrong and deceitful, tricking him to think she was still his, that she still loved him back. But he fell for it anyway and couldn't just let her go now.

Tenzo finally cleared his throat. He didn't like what he had just witnessed. Kakashi was still one of his dearest friends and this... "Enough. Get up. We have to gather evidence and move out quickly. The enemy may return to dispose of anything here so we have to do this now."
