Mom? How are you? Can you please call me? I'm really worried. I texted with trembling fingers, my thumb hovering over the "send" button. Then, I took a shaky breath, and gathered the courage to hit on the screen. I swallowed the bile rising in my throat. My parents weren't answering my calls, and that was quite unusual. They always answered, even when they were busy at work.
What was going on?
To my misfortune, I had to finalise a school project with my best friend, Carla, so I was forced to remain after school. However, my mind was elsewhere. I couldn't concentrate. My parents knew I was with Carla, but they were supposed to check in with me, like they always did. My family was overprotective of me. Sometimes I wondered if they forgot I wasn't six years old anymore, I was 17. I glanced at my phone again before slipping it into the back pocket of my jeans.
They're fine, right?
I tried to convince myself, to push away the nagging feeling that something was wrong, but my pace quickened as I made my way down the sidewalk. Carla was supposed to drive me home, but she had an appointment she couldn't afford to miss. I needed to start saving for a car. It was ridiculous that everyone my age had one, and I didn't. But I didn't have rich parents like some of my classmates, who carried their father's credit cards like they were a right. I had to work for everything I owned. And to be honest, it felt good knowing it was all truly mine.
As the familiar sight of our little house came into view, a smile tugged at my lips.My parents' car was in the driveway. They're home. Everything's fine.
I was just overreacting, right?
Maybe Mom had left her phone at work, and Dad probably hadn't charged his.
There was nothing to worry about...
"Mom? Dad? I'm home! I was getting worried! I called you both so many times." I called out as soon as I entered the house, my voice echoing through the quiet entryway.
I slipped off my jacket, hoping to listen for the usual sounds of my dad's favorite shows or the soft hum of the kitchen. Instead, I heard the faint murmur of the TV from the living room.
Don't worry, Elle.
Dad was probably watching a movie; that's why they hadn't picked up. I felt a wave of relief, but it was short-lived.
I walked quickly toward the living room, trying to ignore the sense of unease creeping up my spine, and the horrendous emotions tangling in my chest.
When I rounded the corner, my heart stopped. My breath caught in my throat. The world seemed to tilt as I blinked and tried to focus on what I was seeing.
My mother was slumped on the couch, blood streaking down her beautiful face. Her eyes were wide and frozen in shock, a deep crimson soaking her clothes.
She'd been stabbed, more than once.
It can't be real... This isn't real. It's a nightmare.
Tears began to spill down my face, but I couldn't breathe long enough to scream. My body trembled, like it was moving without my permission. I turned and looked toward the floor, my heart crashing as I saw my father lying there, face down, motionless.
I almost fainted. My stomach lurched at the sight of him, unrecognizable. His face was bruised, his body sprawled awkwardly, blood pooling around him.
Someone shot him.
I collapsed on my knees, my legs giving out beneath me. My pulse hammered in my ears, and panic clawed at my chest. I was shaking uncontrollably now, my body working on autopilot as I managed to pull my phone from my pocket, and unlocked it with trembling fingers.
