Once we left the man, Deke handed us badges that looked quite fake. "I printed these out before we left."
Mack raised an eyebrow. "Is this a joke?"
Regardless of Mack's comment, all of us took a badge. I grimaced as I felt the badge. It felt as thin as flimsiplast. I let out a sigh. We're so going to get caught...
"I didn't know what our cover was." Deke protested.
"A child could've done better." Daisy retorted.
Alotren nodded. "You got that right."
"You get these out of a cereal box?" Phil asked.
"I wanted to keep our options open." Deke explained.
With that, we approached the crime scene. There were several people surrounding the building, but being held back by police officers. There were also several groundcars parked on the side of the street. Some people there had interesting looking holocameras that let out a bright light. Once we reached the door of the building, a police officer approached us. "Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold up."
Phil held up the badge at once. "Royal Canadian Mounted Police. We were asked to assist."
"Mounties?" The police officer repeated, sounding confused. "Why'd they call you in?"
"Tell me, uh, did you find some bodies without faces?" Mack whispered.
The police officer's face fell. I could sense his fear, radiating off of him. He nodded vigorously.
"Yeah, this sort of thing happens a lot in Canada." Alotren commented.
"Don't worry. We can handle it, so..." Daisy began.
Upon seeing Daisy, the police officer cut her off. "What's a gal like you doing trying to be a Mountie? Can't you find a husband?"
He then glanced over at me. "I could say the same to you, ma'm."
I looked at him, completely baffled. What does that have anything with working? Daisy let out a fake chuckle. "Okay. Yeah, I mean, my sister and I wish that we could hold onto husbands. But for some reason, they just end up with broken ribs whenever they give my sister and me lip. Now move, or a gal like me will knock out a guy like you in front of people like them."
The police officer immediately moved away from the door. "Sorry, ma'm."
With that, we all walked into the building. Once inside, I turned towards Daisy. "That was amazing. You told that officer off. But I don't understand..."
"As soon as we return to the Zephyr, we're giving you a history lesson." Phil informed me.
We then made our way to the three bodies that had no faces. All three of were stripped of their clothing, wearing nothing but their undergarments. I haven't seen anything like this before.
"Turns out 'erased' is a pretty accurate description after all." Mack commented.
Phil then walked over to a fourth man, who still had his face intact. "Not for this guy. What's different about him?"
I noticed Deke and Alotren by a crate that contained bottles with some that were destroyed. Alotren picked up a bottle, bringing it up to his noise. "It's whiskey."
Deke scoffed. "Illegal. I knew you guys were messing with me."
"No, I think he was a bootlegger." Daisy pointed out.
Phil then grabbed another bottle, inspecting it. "Interesting. Swordfish..."
"You got something?" Mack asked.
