Summary: Espers are people with powers. Some are good and some are not so good. Ervin is from a family of adopted Espers who work as heroes but lives in his own city attending university. Then he gets hurt on a mission and the 'villains' are now going to have to deal with his family. Including the guy he actually likes. Joys.

It had been an accident. Of course, it was. Ervin knew that. His teammates might disagree. His family might too. Only he'd been the one there. He'd been the one to see the look on Kerrim's face as he realised it was Ervin in the trap. It had been a look of pure horror. It had been what saved Ervin in the end. He had reacted to the look more than any of the other indicators to get the hell out of there. Seconds later and he would have been dissolved in lava.

Everything burned. That was all he really remembered. The look on Kerrim's face, the horror in his eyes and fire across his skin. Dragging him down so he was sinking in a mud-like pit of fire. Pulling him down into a pit of intense pain until finally something had stabbed him and the pain was no more.

The next few days were a blur. Later when he was conscious, he'd discovered it had been weeks rather than days but in the bubble, it had felt like days. Sometimes he'd wake to scream. Other times it was just like bobbing above the surface of the sea he found himself stuck in. The burning was gone but the tentacles wrapped around his legs and keeping him down and away from the rest of the world were still there.

A hand brushed over his forehead, brushing his hair from it. Ervin opened his eyes and for the first time was aware of more than just his immediate senses. It was bright, too bright really. Fluorescent hospital lights hurt. He could hear a dull and steady beeping to his side. Pain spread from various spots on his body and shut them again. He groaned. He tried to move but hands stopped him.

"Hush, my boy," a deep voice murmured. "You need to stay still for now."

Ervin forced his eyes open again at that voice. In the strange world he'd been locked in, he'd seen a figure looking after him but he hadn't believed it to be real. "Dad?" He croaked, reached out half-blind to the voice. Was it? His Dad never left his city. Never. Had he really come?

"I'm here," his Dad promised, rough lips kissing his forehead and hands grasped his tight. "You're safe. Your siblings are guarding the hospital. We won't let anything happen to you."

"You really came," Ervin smiled happily, his sight starting to be less painful and his adoptive father coming into focus. Unshaved, messy hair and shirt untucked and without a tie, all he needed was a glass of whiskey and his dad would look at home after a rough week. His cologne surrounded Ervin bringing with it an unshakable sense of safety. His Dad was really here.

"Of course I came. You're hurt," his Dad sniffed. "You were betrayed."

"Wasn't Ker's fault," Ervin defended almost immediately. Before trying to sit up. "How long has it been? Is Ker alright?" he demanded, as his Dad held him down with calming hand gestures.

"Your 'friend' is fine to my knowledge. He's," his Dad paused and tilted his head and for one moment it wasn't his father there. It was the hero who protected people from Espers gone out of control. Who Ervin had looked up to. "sweet," the voice settled on, a slimmer in his eyes. "I saw the CV tapes of him getting you here. He didn't look hurt just very concerned and upset. It wasn't mean to be you in the trap it seems. No, I don't think it was him who betrayed you. He just pressed the button."
