The evening that followed was too much for Brett to deal with. He hated seeing Eddy leave, he hated being alone in the bed, he hated the stupid sandwich the nurse insisted he should have as an evening snack to feel better. Everything smelled faintly of Eddy, reminding him of how much of an idiot he was for landing himself there in the first place. He didn't even need the voice to tell him.

So when he curled up in bed, wearing Eddy's hoodie, nose pressed against the pillow Eddy had rested his head on all day, listening to the sound of the silence in his head Brett couldn't handle it anymore. He cried. His soft sobs were muffled by the pillow, and it felt like he was slowly getting crushed by an overwhelming feeling of sadness.

His phone vibrated on the bedside table, and he sniffled before reaching out to it to see who it was, even though he kind of knew. Of course it was Eddy, who else would call him at midnight? He answered it, but a sob prevented him from saying hello.
"Hi love. Sorry to call in the middle of the night... ", Eddy began softly, but his voice trailed off when he heard Brett's sob. "Are you crying, Bretty?"
Brett sniffled and had to force his voice to obey him.
"N... No..", he croaked, trying to wipe his tears. He cleared his throat. "I'm fine. Sorry. It's nothing."
"Love, it's fine to not be fine. What's going on?", Eddy asked softly, and Brett knew that if Eddy had been there, he would have snuck his arms around him and held him. Not having that made Brett sob harder.
"I just... It's just so much, I miss you... I don't even know... It's not really anything specific.. ", he sobbed, hugging the pillow that smelled like Eddy tightly.

"Let's try something, okay?", Eddy said, voice still hoarse like it had been when he left. "Close your eyes for me."
Brett did as instructed, but sobbed anyway. It felt like he couldn't breathe properly.

"Imagine you're in the main hall of a beautiful, inviting manor, you know, the old style with intricate landscape paintings, busts of previous owners and large windows facing a well kept garden."
Brett took a deep breath and tried to imagine it like Eddy instructed.
"All our friends are in there, your mom, your brother, my family...", Eddy continued in a soft voice, but had to sniffle to help his runny nose.
"And I'm there, right next to you, in a matching grey suit. I guess I'll be holding your hand, trying to calm your nerves despite being a nervous wreck myself", Eddy said, laughing lightly at the thought. Brett couldn't help but giggle with him, still wiping a few tears from his cheek.
"You know me, but anyway, what's going happen after that is that I promise to love you in sickness and health and all that. I would hope you'd promise the same back, or else we would have spent a lot of money on nothing..."

Brett snorted.
"Of course I would, you dork", he mumbled, feeling a blush creep over his cheeks.
"Yeah? That's good then, because the guy officiating our marriage will say we can kiss as husbands after that. I guess at that point, I'll be crying at least, with joy of course."
Brett smiled to himself.
"Of course. I'm probably going to cry to."

Eddy laughed, and Brett could hear him smile through the phone as he continued.
"Then I'll lean down and kiss you for the first time as your husband, probably a bit too inappropriately for a wedding, but who cares."
"I love you, Eddy", Brett half whispered, smiling to himself at the image Eddy had built in his head.
"I love you too, Bretty. Get some sleep now, and we'll talk tomorrow, okay?"
"Okay", Brett mumbled, already drifting off with a smile on his lips.
"Love you so much."
