Brian: I was thinking flowers. Or a box of chocolates. Or those edible flower arrangements. You don't have to fly all the way to the east coast.
Dylan: What happened to all that "grand gesture" crap you've been talking about? You were the one who suggested the dramatic drop-in. Remember?
Brian: Yeah, but... Look, I talked to Serena the other day. I think Summer's moved on.
Dylan shook his head in unbelief.
Dylan: No. No, that can't be.
Brian: I'm sorry, bro.
Dylan: Don't "sorry bro" me. It's not over. It can't be over. She has my key necklace. It's not over.
Brian: Ok...
Dylan: Just you wait. I'll be back with Summer sitting next to me on the plane in no time. Just you wait.
Brian continued driving & let out a sigh. He regretted encouraging his cousin to drop in to see Summer. But there was no stopping Dylan. He had made his mind up & had full confidence that Summer still loved him.
The flight back to Virginia was a long one. It took almost 2 days of travel to get from Maldives back to the United States.
Jay: Home sweet home.
Jay opened the door & let Summer in first. He carried their luggage & closed the door behind him.
Summer: I don't miss the traveling, but I sure do miss the warm Maldivian weather.
Summer scanned around the first floor of Jay's house & noticed a baby grand piano in the living room. There was a big red bow around it with a tag.
Summer walked up to the piano & held the tag up. It read: "Merry belated Christmas to the one who makes my heart sing. Love, Jay". Summer turned to look at Jay who was hesitantly smiling.
Jay: Do you like it?
Summer: Like it? Jay, I'm speechless.
Jay: Well, go ahead... Play me a song.
Summer sat on the piano bench & Jay stood behind her.
Summer: This is way too nice of a gift. You shouldn't have.
Jay: I wanted to. Besides it was more of a gift for me anyways. Cause now I'll get to hear you play the piano & sing more often.
Summer playfully hit Jay.
Jay: I'm kidding.
Summer started playing "How Long Will I Love You" & sang along to it. As she was ending the song, Jay sat next to her. He took her hands off of the keys to hold them. They were looking into each other's eyes.
Jay: That was beautiful.
Summer: Thanks.
Jay: Summer?
Summer: Yeah?
Jay: So there's this New Year's Eve thing on base. It's kinda fancy. I go every year & dress up & hang out with friends. But I thought maybe this year I could bring a date & I was hoping you could be my date. Not a date date... Like a friend thing.
Summer hesitated to answer him & took her hands back.
Jay: Or not.
Summer: No, I'm sorry, Jay. It's just that... It's Grandma's birthday & I wanted to spend the day with her.
Jay: Oh ok. That's totally understandable. You should go home. Your grandma & sister must miss you. When are you planning to go back?
Jay stood up. Summer remained on the piano.
Summer: Monday.
Jay nodded.
Jay: Ok. Well, I should probably start unpacking.
Summer: Jay...
Jay: Yeah?
Summer: Thanks for the Christmas gift.
Jay: My pleasure.
Jay continued walking up the stairs.
