He said he loved me...

Who knew that a dare could bring someone to have their most treasured moments of their lives? Who knew that a dare could also bring bigger heartbreak than imagined? And who knew that it would all be happening to me? The innocent 14 year old who lives down the road, you know; the one with long brown hair and brown eyes and a bridge on her nose that turns blue each winter. The one that can’t keep her mouth shut and is, most of the time smiling .The one who liked to think she knew all about guys, the one who liked to act all superior in front of her cousins, when really she was just insecure. Well I didn’t know, and I guess I learnt from that; here’s my story…

Chapter one: The dare

“Ok, this summer is gonna be absolutely terrific!” Gina cried as she lay back and fell on top of my bed, pulling half of the covers to the ground.

“It’d better be… I can’t wait! I’m so excited!” Kate joined her, bouncing around and shifting pillows to get comfortable, her skinny legs kicking furiously

“Hey! D’you mind? That’s my bed!” I giggled and jumped on top of my two cousins.

It’s their first visit to England, they’ve just arrived from Lithuania about two hours ago and we’re still un-packing their clothes into my wardrobe, it’s not like they had loads of clothes (the mini-van they came in allowed only two bags per person) but trying to update them about the English ways while concentrating on a certain task is not easy. Life in Lithuania was hard, not just for them, for most citizens but lucky them, they’re related to me, Monika. My mom had moved to England to work over 7 years ago and now she’s helping out the rest of my relatives and family move down here and get a better life… sounds nice, huh? Yeah, that’s the first impression everyone gets of my mom, but when you get to know her… run!

For the time being, my cousins and their parents are staying with us; in our three bedroomed maisonette; don’t get me wrong, living in a maisonette is perfectly fine with me, it just means that you have two floors and a neighbour living on top! Our place isn’t that bad anyway; we’ve kind of styled it up a bit, made it look classy! I live in a very busy area, where there are kids running around everywhere and gangs of guys walking around in the middle of the night .It’s full of action and drama! It’s gonna be a little cramped, I get that, but I don’t mind. Really, I don’t because if that means having more women in the house then why not?! Trust me, having to live with two brothers is not ideal. Number one, they’re boys. Number two, boys are disgusting, dirty and weird. So having more girls in the household is a definite yes! Our family is quiet small with just me, my mom, my step-dad and two brothers; so the more the merrier!

“Orange… Orange… Orange.. it’s all I see!” Gina sings as she starts to push me off her foot.

Gina’s like that; cute but weird. You see her mind doesn’t work like yours and mine does, she’s like the exact opposite, for example if I tell her not to touch something she will. She’s not exactly the prettiest girl on the block, not with her half black and half brown dyed hair anyway; she’s got very dark brown eyes that always look like she’s challenging you and freckles all over her nose and under her eyes. I think they’re quiet cute, but she hates them. Gina’s quiet short for her age (16), not surprising really after all of these years she’s spent smoking… bad crowd she hung around with is all I’m gonna say… But she is always a great listener. I should know.

“What’s wrong with orange? I thought it was quiet original when mom suggested it…” I trailed off, leaving my sentence unspoken because I know, for a fact, that orange wallpaper does not suit any room, let alone my bedroom.

I did try to spruce it up a bit by adding loads of posters all over my wall; posters of anything and everything I could find (including Justin Bieber) and right about now, looking around, I don’t think it looks that bad. My room is tiny, well not box room tiny. But tiny enough. Although I have somehow squished in a single bed, two sided wardrobe and an ancient writing desk I will still have to share it with my cousins, so yeah, that doesn’t leave me with much space does it?

“So… where will we be sleeping again?” Kate asked me, a very sensible question too.

“I hate to break it to you girlies, but you’ll be sleeping here… with me!” I say with a stupid posh accent, actually managing to sound like a perverted old man.

We start to giggle hysterically. Kate is so different to her sister, like water and fire or day and night; not just in the appearance department but in the personality too! Kate being a blonde is very strange as her mom is a brunette and so is her dad, but everyone says that she takes on after our great-nan. She loves to draw, and if I may say so, has a great talent. She is not like her sister at all, for example Gina loves make-up and boys but Kate hates make-up and is a tomboy herself! Well I guess I was like that at her age too, which by the way is 12.

“No problem. We could stay up all night… tell secrets… play games…um, annoy your brothers!” Now that is also one more reason why I’m not against them staying in my room, I mean having fun with your cousins and doing the girly stuff I never got to do is totally awesome!

But on the other hand, I’d rather leave my brothers alone. If there is one person I don’t mess with, it’s my big brother: Aaron. He’s 16 and a total jerk, well all boys are! He is supposedly good looking but I don’t think so, it’s a good thing too otherwise things would totally get awkward…

That night when we settled down into our make-shift beds, we couldn’t stop giggling and whispering, I don’t suppose anyone could if they heard our conversations! We talk about anything and everything, including things that you should only keep private. We were close like that.

“Let’s play truth and dare!” Gina yelped when I poked her in the ribs for being too loud

“No thanks, remember the last time we played? I ended up kissing that kid… what’s his name? Mantas?” Kate pulled a face.

“What?! You’ve already had your first kiss? Blimey…” I tried to keep the surprise out of my voice but I knew that they’d already heard and now their eyes were on me.

“Haven’t you had your first kiss?” Gina asked, she didn’t sneer; she genuinely looked surprised which made me even more uncomfortable and embarrassed

“No.” I replied, then buried my head in the pillow “I know... I know. You probably think I’m such an idiot! Gosh…” I murmured into the soft velvet.

“No way! I’ll promise, this summer you’ll get your first kiss!”

And that’s how the dare was made. Gina dared us to have had kissed, hugged or be involved in a relationship with a guy. It was a good dare, you have to admit. But being cocky me, I involved a time limit: by the end of the summer. So it was done; Gina, Kate and me (Monika) would have had to have been kissed, hugged or in a relationship with a guy by the end of the summer. Done. At the time, I could never refuse a dare, nor could I lose one. So it was on.
