Chapter 35

For an hour they travelled as far away from the camp as possible in hopes of finding a safe place to stay for the night. It didn't taken them long to follow some old dirt tracks to an abandoned railway, and they followed the rusted train tracks until they came across a wide and dark tunnel. From here, they were within walking distance of the river, yet they were far away enough so that they weren't at the mercy of any aquoids that may be living in the deep depths of the wide river.
"We can park and hide in there. It's out of sight of passers by, and it's open enough for our best chance to avoid aliens." Yoongi explained, Jungkook nodding to his suggestion.

So that's what they did. In the next couple of minutes, both vehicles were parked safely at the entrance of the tunnel, closely followed by each of the squad members leaving the safety of the vans to sit together and discuss a plan. The nine of them sat in a circle, Hoseok and Leanne going to grab some stored wood from the RV as Yoongi made a small circle out of rocks for a make-shift fire pit. Once the wood was layed neatly within the circle of stones, Hobi took a rock in his hand, roughly scraping his axe on it to form sparks until a fire had ignited.

Considering there was no heating in the old vehicles, every one of them shuddered at the coldness that was increasing by each night as winter neared, the fire bringing a pleasant warmth to their cold-abused skin.
"So, I guess it's time to form a plan?" Jimin said, the others turning to Jungkook who nodded.
"Yeah. This area seems reasonably safe, but we can't stay here for long because we all know that South Camp has probably hired the best trackers to locate us, so we need to be on our guard." Jungkook said, the other eight of them understanding where he was coming from.

"I suppose we could start with Namjoon and I explaining our current findings? It might help to get us somewhere considering we've all been dragged into becoming wanted." Jin said with a hidden tone of bitterness, immediately earning a glare from both Hoseok and Taehyung.
"Hey, we helped you back there, and if we can find a way to help humanity by learning how to win against these things that would be huge. A little appreciation and cooperation would be great." Hoseok said with narrowed eyes as he folded his arms across his chest, Jin just scoffing and glancing at Namjoon who sat silently beside him.
"Yeah, and if we all get bloody killed who the fuck is gonna do something about it then?" Jin growled in response, most of the squad now glaring at him.

"It's no one's fault that South Camp treated you so disgustingly. If one more word comes out of that Jin guy's mouth I'm gonna punch him, injured or not." Taehyung whispered to Jungkook in a fed up tone, visibly tensing up until the younger sighed and placed his hand comfortably on Taehyung's thigh.
"Relax, it's not like they can back out now." Jungkook replied in a hushed but rigid voice, Taehyung rolling his eyes and nodding.

"Look, I know life's tough, but we all need to fucking cooperate here if we're gonna get anywhere." Yoongi groaned, Jin failing to send him a nasty look as he noticed the dog that sat obediently in the mint-haired male's lap.
"Come on Jinnie, let it go and let's help." Namjoon said to his husband in a low voice, the eldest just giving a fed up sigh and nodding.
"Fine, you talk."

At that, the whole squad turned to Namjoon, who ensured that he had their full attention before talking.
"Thanks to our close observation of the heptoids over the last year, we've been able to run a couple of long-term tests in East Camp on the corpses of each species that we've come across. That includes borgs, aquoids, cynoids and draths." Namjoon began, his words causing hums of interest from around him to push him to continue.

"We've noticed that as time goes on, each species is slowly developing. You may have already noticed that they are gaining intelligence, growing stronger, faster, and smarter over time." Namjoon explained, the others nodding as he spoke.
"We were just thinking that the other day when we were attacked by a cluster of cynoids. It's almost like they communicated with each other to try and trick us." Leanne said, Jungkook, Yoongi and Hoseok nodding along as they recalled the events of that night in the woods.
