"I'm sorry, that information is confidential." The receptionist at the hospital said as Jared tried to get the information on the missing medical supplies.
"Oh no no, I'm not going to do anything with it, you see me and my buddy we were talking and-" Jared tried to persuade her but jeez these staff don't budge.
"I'm sorry, that information is restricted to hospital staff-" oh for Christ's sake.
"He's with me," I interrupt and step up to the counter, "my mom works here, can I talk to her?" (Btw, guess where this conversation is based off from)
"Who?"
"Heidi Hansen. She said something about a promotion so she could see where and when medical supplies are being used, when they're running low, all that. Is she busy or not." I accidentally snapped a bit at the end, "sorry."
"She should be done with a patient soon, I'll call her down when she's ready."
"Thank you, sorry for the trouble." I feel like I had to apologize, but Jared just pushed me away from the counter.
"Way to go Hansen! Speaking up to a total stranger!" He proudly exclaims (I think that's a word, or atleast works in that context).
"I still apologized tho-"
"Yeah you're being polite, who knows what they go through everyday."
"Well I do, my mom works here- you know that, sorry."
"I was proud, take it." Rude.
"Okay, fine, thank you." I look away and grumble but still smile, I don't like compliments but it's from Jared. I cross my arms and put on a pouting face, fake of course. I just love his reactions.
"C'mon~, look at meee." It was cute at first but then he started whining and all hope was lost. He gently places a hand on the side of my face and pushes me to look at him.
"No talk, me angy." I turn away again. He chuckles and does the same thing again but more aggressive. It caught me off guard because well 1, didn't expect it and 2, we're in public. He only does that when we're alone.
"Now listen, either stop being a bad boy or-"
"Evan?" Thank the lord, my mom is here. I rush over to her while I hear Jared sigh in the background. I always get my way. Not in like a spoiled way but just- whatever, continue the story.
"Finally, you took ages!" I joke as I hug her, she's always busy so I don't get to a lot.
"Sorry, the patient was being a real pain and wouldn't let me leave, he was always 'hey, you're my nurse and I expect to be treated!'". She put air quotes and used a mocking voice. I don't like how busy she is but she always has funny work stories.
"It's okay, anyway," I signal over to Jared, "you remember Jared." They do the whole shake hands thing yada yada. Now it's time to get down to business.
"So what brings you here? It seemed urgent."
"That is a great question that will need to be held somewhere more private."
"Oh, okay, well uhmm," she pauses and thinks for a second, "let me see if I can get another staff to cover me." She does that parent thing with her finger, she points but also moves it around- it's weird.
"Okay, great."
"Give me a second." She walks through a door beside the receptionist desk. Parents are always moving around, I don't get it.
"We might actually get somewhere!" I say excitedly to Jared, who is already smiling.
"I can't wait, imagine if we could figure this case out before the police. We would be real detective agents."
"Alright, alright, but don't get your hopes up too high. She's my mom but she's still a hospital staff, she might not share anything or she wouldn't 'be a team player'. You know how she is." I laugh.
"Yeah, yeah. Still cool though."
"Mhm." Just think for a moment. I'm dating a killer, who is seeking revenge on a secret boss who has been off the grid for months, and I'm about to tell my mom. My life just got a whole lot more interesting.
Jared grabs my hand and I would say unexpectedly, but we're dating so not really. I squeeze his hand as the nerves set in. How is my mom even going to react? She's only seen Jared twice, including now. She knows about my ex, what if she thinks he's like him?
"I just want you to know," Jared speaks up and I look at him, "you're very brave. Thank you, for everything." He smiles sweetly at me and I smile back. I love this dude.
"You didn't kill me, it's the least I could do." I laugh.
"Shut up." He responds then kisses me. I happily kiss back. When we pull apart I'm still smiling but I'm holding his face. My life has been terrible, he made it so much better.
"Am I interrupting something?" Someone announces from a distance, startling me. I pull away from Jared and look to see who it was. It was my mom. Of course. She has a smirk on her face and I can feel my cheeks heating up. This is not how I expected her to find out.
"Mom, heyyy." I nervously laugh, trying to act as if nothing happened.
"Heyyy to you too, I'm good to go. Unless you want to finish?"
"Nope, nope nope. I'm done. We're good- can we go now?"
"Okay, lead the way." She smiles and gestures towards the exit. This is going to be interesting.
