Hattie McDaniel was the first African American to win an Oscar. Despite playing a "Mammy", her character was hard-working, no-nonsense, full of witty wisdom, country, loving, and 'got jokes' like my grandma. My grandma and her generation were "The Help". Hattie McDaniel would say "I'd rather play a maid than be a maid."
