[NAVE]
I woke up as I smelled the fresh ocean breeze coming through the window panel. I got dressed and headed downstairs to breakfast. Jo placed a napkin in my lap (as etiquette), and I tied another around my neck like a bandanna, because I have a habit of spilling or dripping things.
After breakfast, I went out to the beach again. The birds crowed as I walked past onto the warm sand. I've always felt that I had a connection with the ocean, that I feel something that drags me here. It sounds weird, but trust me, it's natural, as my parents said.
I heard a nearby splash. I quickly turn my head to the sound and saw a young boy, just around my age, sitting on the nearby rocks, watching me carefully. He gasped as I looked at him, diving into the water quickly, almost like a fish.
"Wait!" I called, as I ran over to the area where I saw him. He raised his head in confusion as I panted.
"You- you're not supposed to s-see me...," the boy gasped. I gasped too, after I looked down.
He had a silver tail that was covered in shiny scales that glittered in the sunlight, more beautiful than anything I've ever seen.
He also had ginger-colored hair and curiously, orange freckles that dotted the bridge of his nose, just like mine. His eyes shone a bright green color, the same as emeralds.
"Please, d-don't hurt m-me! I-I don't m-mean any harm!" he gasped again, looking pale and flailing his tail slightly. I backed away slowly, hoping that he would get the gesture that I wasn't a monster or anything that would hurt him.
He looked at me nervously. I could see the fear in his wide eyes.
"It's okay, I won't hurt you," I said quietly, holding my hand out to the ginger. He took it, grasping it with a wet one.
"My name's Nave, what's yours?" I asked, hoping that it wouldn't scare him too much.
"N-Nave?" he said, holding my hand tighter. "M-My name i-is Cash."
"Like money?" I joked, hoping he would understand. He nodded his head slowly, then began to continue.
"My mom said that humans used exotic forms of trade, gold, known as 'cash.' We collect them in fallen shipwrecks we find..."
"We?"
"Yeah, we. My mom, my older sibling, and me."
"Who's your sibling?"
"Their name is Quinn, and they are always there for me."
"I have an older sister too! Her name's Jo, and even though she may bark, she never bites! I also have a mom and dad who knows what is the best for me."
"Really? I don't have a father, he passed away a long time ago, around the time I was born."
"Oh, I feel sorry for you..."
"It's okay, I didn't really know him, but my mom said he was a person who wanted humans and merpeople to get along someday."
Cash flicks his tail and tiny droplets landed in my hair. He giggled at the pouting face I made, and I laughed, his smile is contagious!
"Wanna be friends?" I asked, hoping that he would agree. I held my hand out to him again.
"F-Friends?" he grasped my arm.
"Friends," I held his damp hand. He smiled.
"I-I know we just met, but will I see you again?" he asks anxiously. I smiled.
"Of course! I'll visit you every day!"
He cheers and smiles back. I wave as I walked to the lighthouse. As I climbed up to the top, I looked down through the windows and saw the ginger, watching me with a sparkle in his eyes. I smile to myself as I turn the power on of the giant lantern.
The world around me had just lit up, and now, I have a new friend to be there with me.
