[DAN]
"Dan, Dan!" my little brother said excitedly as I arrived home from scavenging. I smile as I patted him on the head.
"Hey there, Henry," I said, unpacking my things to our "home." We didn't have much, we lived on the streets for months now, and it's been hard on us after our parents passed.
Mostly on Henry, I felt extremely bad that he didn't have much of a chance to live a normal life, like mine before the incident. But just as much as I wanted to send him off to school for an education, we just couldn't afford it with all the expenses we had on our hands. Necessities were hard to come upon, and it was no different for us.
Today wasn't a good day for finding things to eat. Especially with most of the stores closed and nobody being home with the holidays around the corner. I'm just glad that Henry's not a fussy eater, he basically was happy with anything that's given to him.
Along the streets I walked, and without a coat, I was freezing to the bone. I had given mine to Henry, he's most vulnerable to the cold, and I couldn't bear to lose him when I lost my parents. I promised them that I would protect and care for him, no matter what it took.
Begging for food was pretty easy today, though, which took my mind off the snow piling around me. Most families were able to give presents and food, which I was particularly happy about. I thanked multiple people and families, and behind each and every one of them, was a family gathered around the tree, wishing a happy holidays.
Secretly, I wished that the family were mine, all together and full again, no worries or sadness upon our minds. Just happily singing about good ole' Santa Claus coming down the chimney and spreading joy wherever he went.
After knocking on many doors and ringing doorbells, I headed to our little camp. Henry was fast asleep, and I gently shook him awake. His eyes widened at the sight of the food and extra unneeded presents that families gave us, which I had put around a tiny sapling tree.
"Santa heard us...," he whispered. "He is real!"
I nodded, as I didn't want to make him give up on the Christmas dream of Santa. It was his childhood, and children should be able to experience it.
"Yes, Santa did come, he really did hear our prayers," I smiled, then tucked him back to bed. It was late, and like any parent, I didn't want him sleeping past his bedtime.
I woke up the next morning, tired but happy nevertheless. I glanced over at Henry, still asleep in the blankets. He looked like a small angel amongst the snow and leaves.
"Henry...?" I whispered, touching his shoulder to wake him up. I could feel him shivering with my touch. "Henry?" I called a bit more sudden.
